I was actually given the Lovehoney Desire Wand as a birthday gift from a friend with benefits, in response to a complaint I’d made about having to find a plug socket to use my Doxy. I’d never tried a rechargeable wand before, and the fact the Desire Wand is made of body safe materials, by a retailer well known to most consumers made me really want to review it.
The Lovehoney Desire Wand is normally £99.99, but as it’s an own brand product, it is often included in sales and offers.
I’ve tried a few Lovehoney own brand toys, and I was expecting the packaging to be much like those products had been. Very basic, cheerful, and perfectly functional. However, the actual packaging for the Lovehoney Desire Wand is very different, a sleek purple and black box houses the storage bag that contains the wand and charger.
The storage bag is beautiful. Beautiful enough that I’m not considering buying other toys in the desire line because of the storage bags they come with. The bag is a faux black leather, with a charging hole so the Desire Wand can be charged while in storage, which is excellent for those with children or pets.
I have neither, but space is at a premium in my flat, so it’s a bonus simply as a space saver.
When you first get your Desire Wand, you need to fully charge it before use. This takes about 180 minutes, providing around the same time of use. When the battery is drained you do need to fully recharge it, but I’ve found I’m able to ‘top-up’ the battery when it isn’t drained. Charging is done via the mains, with a UK three point plug, and there is a low battery warning before the battery dies totally.
The body and head of the wand are both purple. Very purple. It’s very much not the colour I would personally choose, but I actually quite like it. The head is all silicone, which is one of the reasons I wanted this despite having my Doxy- it’s a body safe material, doesn’t attract lint at all, and is very easy to clean. While it’s recommended to use a water based lube with this wand, I personally didn’t find a need for it. That said, I self lubricate a lot, so if you’re on the drier side I would definitely recommend using a lube.
The body of the wand has three buttons- a plus button, a minus button, and a central button. The Desire Wand does have patterns, but like with the patterns on any toy, I do not use them. I don’t like patterns at all. But you can switch to them from normal vibrations with the central button, and from there you can change intensity. I have nothing to say on the functions because I have only ever used them by accident, and I hate vibrator patterns in general.
The non-pattern function has about five intensities, and I find I can get off on almost all of them. The higher intensities are great for getting off through clothing, but I have found they tend to be too much for my partners. If you’re not used to intense broad vibrations, I’d suggest sticking to lower settings.
I looked into things, and technically the Lovehoney Desire Wand is not as powerful as a Doxy. But in practice, I actually find it more intense than my Doxy. It’s really fucking fantastic for lazy or quick masturbation sessions, but I can also tease things out very slowly if I want to. I’ve only used it with sex partners who have vulvas, but like all wands, it’s perfectly usable for people with other anatomies.
The only two downsides I can think of is the noise, and the fact that the wand isn’t waterproof. I’m really not a bath masturbator at all (I currently don’t even have a bath), so the biggest impact this has for me is in terms of cleaning. And it’s still very easy to clean. That said, the noise is something you should think about. I used the wand in a hotel room I was staying at during a conference, and my neighbour knocked on my door to ask me to turn it down. That’s how loud it is.
While I personally didn’t have much of a problem with the weight of the Desire Wand, I recognise this might be a problem for others. If you have mobility issues or weak joints, the Desire Wand might not be for you.
I never thought I’d say this, but I actually prefer the Lovehoney Desire Wand to my Doxy Wand, and I find it much better for travel play sessions. It’s shot up into my top few toys- the Desire Wand and Pleasure Works First Mate are now my top picks for play sessions- in a way that I never expected from a Lovehoney own brand toy. At all.
It’s not the cheapest vibe, and I don’t think I’d recommend it to those new to vibrators, or people who don’t have a preference for strong and broad vibrations. But if those two points are you, I’d definitely recommend the Lovehoney Desire Wand, especially if you can pick it up in a deal or on sale.
