Review: Fun Factory Volta

I’ve discussed the Fun Factory Volta before, comparing it to the Satisfyer Power Flower, but I feel it deserves its own review. My opinion on the Volta isn’t going to be groundbreaking- I can’t recall seeing any negative reviews of it and I’m not about to break that trend. But I still felt it was worth adding my voice to all the others telling you that yes, the Volta really is that great.

I’m not going to lie and pretend the Volta doesn’t look dorky. It looks incredibly dorky, like a weird dolphin, or the beak of some kind of tropical bird. It has a slight curve, with the silicone body splitting into two flexible rounded tips that vibrate when the toy is on. But, weird looks aside, the Volta is an incredibly rumbly and versatile vibrator.

My Volta (which I won from a giveaway run by fellow sex blogger Little Switch Bitch) is a lovely teal blue, although the Volta also comes in an all black version if you’re feeling super goth, all for $139.99. It’s intended as an external vibrator (and that’s how I used it), but you could use it internally if you wanted to, although it’s not anal safe.

I love the Volta’s motor. It’s rumbly and deep, with 6 speeds and 6 patterns, although as ever the patterns don’t do much for me. The little rounded tips of the Volta do visibly move when the toy is on, although as they don’t move a huge amount, I’d characterise them as reverberating rather than flickering.

volta2.pngThe versatility of the Volta is a massive positive for me when it comes to partnered sex and is why the Volta is one of my top used vibrators with partners. If you didn’t know already, I’m trans and pretty much exclusively sleep with other trans people. Because of this and the fact that the sex toy industry hasn’t really got on board with treating trans people as part of their customer base, it can be hard to find toys that fit our bodies. The people with penises I sleep with are AMAB people on estrogen HRT, who can find it hard to maintain erections, or AFAB people who’ve had bottom surgery, who don’t have more/less sensitive areas in the same places that people with standard issue penises may have them. Penis vibrators can often be unideal for my partners because of this, but the Volta works really well. While it’s definitely intended for use on people with vulvas (the tagline is ‘power to the clit’) I haven’t come across any kind of genital configuration I can’t use it on. The ways I’ve found work best for using the Volta on somebody with a penis are: having the flexible silicone tips fit around the head (for my partners on estrogen), running the tips along either side of the shaft (for all partner, but especially those who are post meta), or pressing the down against the base of the shaft (for partners who are post phalloplasty especially, as well as those on E).

Both I and a lot of the other transmasc people with vulvas I sleep with are on testosterone and have bottom growth. Using the Volta with the tips on either side of the clit/dick does seem to feel more intense for us than the people I’ve used it with who have vulvas (both AFAB and AMAB), but I have a dick of steel, and even more more sensitive partners have been totally fine the Volta on its lower settings. It does feel a lot like a stroking sensation even without movement, making it a great toy for when my wrists are playing up[ref]I have joint issues that are relatively mild, but do cause pain sometimes[/ref]and I can’t thrust toys against my partners comfortably. The Volta doesn’t even have to be used on genitals- I don’t have any nipple sensitivity after my nipple grafts, but partners of mine have enjoyed the Volta for nipple stimulation.

There’s a bunch of ways I can think of to use the Volta, and probably a whole lot more I haven’t thought of yet. While the way I think most people with vulvas I’ve seen talk about the Volta have defaulted to using it with the tips on either side of their clit/dick, I actually started with the tips on the top and underneath my dick. That’s not to say I don’t also enjoy using it with the tips on either side, but there’s one specific spot on the underside of my dick that makes orgasms SO easy if I’m using pinpoint stimulation. Putting the Volta’s tips around my dick or placing it just underneath is fantastic at stimulating that spot.

I know there will be questions about how I feel the Volta compares to the Power Flower, and to be honest, my opinion hasn’t really changed from when I reviewed the Power Flower. The Volta’s vibrations are definitely rumblier than the Power Flower’s, particularly on the more powerful settings. I definitely prefer the Volta, both for its vibrations and for a few assorted reasons. The handle on the Volta is all hard plastic, and I find this way more comfortable than the half silicone handle on the Power Flower that doesn’t keep its shape, for example. I also find the lower number of fins on the Volta easier to control when it comes to directing vibration, like that the Volta has a travel lock, and don’t have complicated feelings around the ethics of recommending the Volta. But if you can’t afford the Volta and you don’t have ethical issues with it, I wouldn’t fault you for checking out the Power Flower instead. If you can afford the Volta though, I’d absolutely recommend it over the Power Flower. On top of meaning you’re giving money to the company that came up with the vibrator concept in the first place, the Volta has a more powerful motor and more comfortable handle.

The Volta is one of my favourite external vibrators, especially for partnered play. The versatility of the Volta is especially great for people like my partners and I, whose bodies don’t fit into the sex toy industry’s neat ideas of what ‘men’ and ‘women’ are like, but even for non-intersex cis people it’s a massive plus point. If you really really hate pinpoint stimulation, the Volta might be a bit much for you, but otherwise I can’t recommend it enough.
