Review: We-Vibe Tango X

Have you ever had a moment when something isn’t quite perfect, but it’s close enough to perfect that you’re pretty sure it can’t practically be improved on? Something like a sourdough recipe, where the texture is a tiny bit too chewy and the crust isn’t quite crackly enough but everything else is so perfect—and you’re pretty sure you can’t make those slight crust and texture improvements without ruining some other feature—that you’re willing to let it slide. Or like me with the original We-Vibe Tango, where the single button was a little fiddly and feeling the vibrations at full strength in my fingers was sometimes a bit Too Much, but it was so close to perfection that I was willing to let those slide in the pursuit of The Rumbliest Bullet Vibrator.

A slide from a presentation comparing the Tango X to Samwise from Lord of The Rings. It reads 'The Tango X: upgraded version of the Tango, which had a reputation for being rumbliest bullet vibe available. The X is that, but like perfected. Why is Sam the Tango X? He’s dependable, you know what you’re getting, small package but lots of energy, will treat me right'

Turns out, We-Vibe not only could but have improved the Tango. I’m always a little sceptical about ‘Upgrades’ within the sex toy industry, but this one is genuinely true. The We-Vibe Tango X is an improvement on almost all of my pain points with the original Tango, it has taken the place of my Tango at my bedside, and I’ve become so enthralled with it that during a PowerPoint evening with some friends where I presented “What If Lord of The Rings Characters Were Sex Toys’, I compared it to Samwise Gamgee. That’s how much I love the Tango X.

What’s Changed?

Much as I love the idea of simply saying ‘the Tango X is the Samwise Gamgee of vibrators’, I feel like I do need to give some context and explanation of why I love the Tango X so much. So, to start, how does it differ from the Tango original?

The original Tango is known for being incredibly rumbly, and for good reason. Controlled by a single button, it comes with 4 solid settings of various intensities, as well as 4 patterns. It’s a little longer than some other bullets, and I found this meant if I wanted to harness a dildo with a vibrator hole in the base, most of the time I couldn’t use the Tango. The Tango has a classic bullet vibrator shape for the most part, with a flattened edge on one side, ideal for more pinpoint stimulation.

The first was the single button controls. I use the Tango pretty consistently on its highest setting, and I can’t count the number of times I’ve accidentally hit the button and gone from steady stimulation to patterns, having to then loop all the way back around again. It’s really frustrating, especially when I inevitably forget the number of times I’ve pressed the button already, and have to do the same thing twice. And while I’m not a fan of vibrator patterns at all, I definitely did think the lack of intensity control with the patterns was a possible source of frustration for other people. On top of this, while I may have genitals of steel that not only can deal with the Tango’s most intense setting but actively demand it, I do not have fingers of steel. My hands sometimes complained if I was at it with the Tango for a while, and the battery didn’t hold too well.

The Tango X deals with all of these complaints.

In many ways it’s pretty similar to the original Tango, but adds a silicone grip around the base. This does two things—adds some insulation for my poor fingers and creates enough space to add additional buttons. Instead of the Tango original’s single button, the Tango X has three—one to increase intensity/speed, one to decrease it, and a third to move between solid or patterned vibrations. The Tango X has 7 patterns, all of which can be set to any of the 8 intensity settings. While I’m pretty boring when it comes to combinations of these—I’m a solid setting on top intensity kind of person—I always appreciate having the options for customisation like this. And I get more play time out of each charge—around 2 hours from a hour and a half charge.

There are even a couple of things I didn’t realise were irritating that the Tango X managed to improve on. The attachment points for the original Tango’s charging cable were a little iffy, and there were a couple of occasions where I found the charger completely fell out of place during overnight charging. The Tango X’s charging points are magnetic, and it’s much easier to click the charger into place.

What Hasn’t Changed

While the Tango X is an improvement on the original Tango, it still has all the features I loved about the Tango. It’s still rumbly as hell—some people have said the Tango X has a more powerful motor, but I personally can’t feel a difference in use—still waterproof, still fits easily between bodies for partnered penetrative sex, still has the tip I need for more pinpoint stimulation, and still small enough to travel with.

What I’m Still Holding Out On

So one complaint I had about the original Tango that I’m still unsure if the X improves on is the lifespan of the vibrator itself. While I adore my Tango, it is the second Tango I’ve owned because the Tango had a tendency to slowly die after a year or so (although admittedly this was being used multiple times a day). It still worked, but the motor wasn’t as glorious and rumbly as before. I haven’t owned the Tango X long enough to confirm if this is still an issue or not. While I love the Tango X and get enough use out of it that I’m happy to buy a replacement if this short lifespan is still an issue, I understand if that’s a deal breaker for some people.

Conclusion

I think at this point it’s pretty clear that I love the We-Vibe Tango X. I adore this vibrator and I’d recommend it to so many different kinds of people: people wanting a toy for solo play, people looking for a toy for partnered play, people who know they like rumbly vibrations, or people looking for a toy they can travel with, to name a few. While I own and have used so, so many sex toys over the almost four years I’ve been running this blog, if I had to choose just one it’d be the Tango X, and that’s the best praise I can think of giving a toy. That or comparing it to Samwise Gamgee.
