Review: NS Novelties Renegade Hollow Plug Kit

The Renegade Peekers Trainer Hollow Butt Plug Kit is a set of three hollow silicone butt plugs, sent to me for review by SexToy365.co.uk and made by NS Novelties. Made of firm black silicone, the three plugs are pretty identical in form, with each larger plug simply being a scaled up version of the smallest plug. I will say that even though they are described as a ‘trainer kit’ on the set’s packaging, these are not beginner plugs and they’re quite chunky. The smallest of the three plugs has an insertable length 2.75”, and a circumference of 4.5” at its widest, the medium is 3.75” insertable with a circumference of 5.75”, and the largest of the three has 4.25” of insertable length and a 6.5” circumference.

holeObviously, the main difference between these plugs and other butt plugs I own is that these plugs are hollow. But what is the appeal of hollow plugs? Obviously, people’s tastes and motivations vary, but there’s two broad categories of reasons that people like hollow plugs. The first is simply visual- for some people seeing how stretched open somebody is is something pretty hot. The second and more broad reason is that the hollowness means other things can be put into the plug. In some cases, this can include penetration through the plug with fingers, a penis, or another toy, although the Renegade plugs are a bit too firm and narrow for this. In others, it can be liquids, be this lube or some kind of body fluid[ref]Cum, spit, piss, you get the idea[/ref]. The appeal to me is a mix of the two- the novelty of being able to actually see how far I was being stretched coupled with the idea of being able to top up my lube as I went.

Firstly though, how well do they work as actual butt plugs? I will say straight away that these aren’t the kind of plugs I can use without some kind of warm up. Because the tips of these plugs are so broad and flat compared to non-hollow plugs of the same size, I need to warm up by stretching with a plug much larger before I can use them. I actually haven’t been able to take the largest plug as- while I can definitely take the actual girth of its widest point- the amount I need to stretch to just start inserting it is really large. If you’re entirely new to anal play the Renegade set isn’t the right plug for you- go for something with a smoother taper like the FireFly Prince or Mood Naughty plugs instead. Also because of this, I wouldn’t recommend the Renegade set as a ‘training kit’. I do appreciate having multiple sizing options and I have been able to work up sizes, but I wouldn’t have been able to do this without the use of plugs I already own.

medium_plugIn addition, I ran into an issue with the smallest plug in particular when it was inserted. The ‘neck’ between the second bulb and the base is a flare, which does make removing the plug really comfortable and easy. With plugs that have too much of a jump between the widest point and the neck removal can be difficult, as you’re forcing your sphincter to open up super quickly. The trouble is, I think the flared neck overcorrects too far. While I didn’t have trouble keeping the plugs in when I was standing up, with the small in particular I had trouble keeping the plug in if I was bent over or on my back. Obviously, when the appeal of a hollow plug is visual or being able to insert liquids, this is an issue! I found the medium was a little easier to keep in, but I still had to actively work to keep it in, which isn’t something I want from a plug. I get why NS Novelties gave the neck a flare as it does help with the visual aspect of the plug, but I don’t think it’s worth the trade off in terms of plug functionality. The fact that the very base of the plug neck is wider than the widest point of the plug body means that your butt is able to push the whole plug out super easily, and that just ultimately makes it non functional as a plug. It absolutely works as a hollow butt probe, but without the shape allowing for a butt to keep it in easily, I don’t think it counts as a decently designed plug.

I don’t think the design is a total bust- I didn’t have issues with plug slippage when standing up, and I found the actual base of the plug really comfortable between my cheeks. Initially, I was worried the silicone would be too soft to hold shape, but the thickness and firmness held its shape really well under the pressure of my butt, and I liked what I did get to see visually! I was able to top up lube while using a toy by utilising the hole through the toy, and while this did make toy cleanup more involved it was actually really fun, especially when using lube designed to look like cum. But that flared neck really absolutely has to go for me to recommend these as plugs.

3_plugsOf course, if you’re ok with having a probe rather than a plug, that’s entirely fine. I had a lot of fun using the small and medium toys from this set as probes, and I definitely wouldn’t have the complaints I do if they weren’t marketed as plugs. But if you’re specifically looking for plugs, I want to give some alternative suggestions. I don’t have enough experience with or knowledge about hollow plugs to be able to recommend a direct alternative to this plug set, but if you’re looking for a general training kit instead, I can do that- the Mood Naughty 1 Butt Plug Trainer Set definitely has more of a jump between its middle and large sizes than I would suggest, but is solid otherwise. If you’re alright with buying two plugs separately, the FireFly Prince Small and Medium would work well as a beginners training set, as there’s only a 0.1” difference in girth at their widest points[ref]This sounds like very little, but it feels much larger in practice[/ref].
