Review: Packer Gear Jock Strap

When it comes to daily packing, I’ve been pretty stuck in my ways for a long time. I pack pretty much any time I leave my apartment (which admittedly isn’t much during the pandemic, but still), and honestly a lot of the time when I’m just alone inside. While what packer I use has varied, the actually way I’ve packed has remained pretty constant- I normally stick with wearing my packer in the SpareParts Pete Commando Harness, and then wearing some kind of underwear on top.

packing_harnessI have to admit, I do really love the SpareParts Pete Commando Harness. Like, a lot. But I also want to branch out and try alternatives, especially so I can give informed recommendations when people ask me for packing underwear recommendations. And the Jock Strap Packing Harness from the Packer Gear line ($23 to the SpareParts Pete Commando’s $27) is a fantastic alternative. In some ways, I’d actually say it’s better than the SpareParts Pete Commando.

For this review, I tried the Packer Gear Jock Harness with a handful of different packers- the Vixen Mr. Right, the Packer Gear Silicone Packer, the NYTC Archer, and my Emisil Prosthetic. While I felt this represented a good variety of packers, it obviously doesn’t represent every packer on the market and I can’t guarantee how other models will fit. I think it’s definitely worth noting that all the packers I tried the Packer Gear Jock Harness with are silicone- as I mentioned in my guide to soft packing, packers made of TPR (like the Mr Limpy, Blush Performance, or non-silicone Packer Gear packers) are more prone to tearing.

Off the bat, I want to say I do think there are some odd design choices when it comes to the Packer Gear Jock Harness. While the O-ring sewn into the harness is a perfectly fine size for a strap-on harness, packers tend to be on the smaller side. I’ve been able to pull packers through the O-ring in their entirety without even really stretching it. Admittedly, the ways I’ve had to pull at packers to do this don’t represent any of the kinds of force that a packer would be put through during daily wear and I haven’t noticed any issues caused by the O-ring size when actually wearing the Jock Strap, but it still comes across as an odd choice.

in_undiesOne of the things I initially thought was just an odd design choice is the shape of the Packer Gear Jock Strap’s straps. I’m used to the straps of jock straps fitting under my buttcheeks, giving them a little lift. That’s how the SpareParts Pete Commando fits, as does my beloved Joque, and it’s how I expected the Packer Gear Jock to fit. Not so, as it turns out. The straps go over the buttcheeks instead. It’s not a super flattering design and it took me a while to get used to the feeling of as somebody who’s used to under cheek straps. It wasn’t until I was mid way through a ‘trying on a bunch of different underwear styles over packer straps’ session that I realised what this design meant- even on my underwear with less coverage, the straps of the Packer Gear Jock Strap don’t show.

Now, this may not be an issue for you, and it isn’t a huge enough issue for me most of the time. I’m not normally one to strip down to the underwear around other people, and if I do it’s normally around people who I don’t need to be stealth around. That is, with one exception- the gym.

While I’m now a born-again briefs man, I did have a past life as a trunks wearer, and on gym days (at least pre-plague- I’m sticking to home workouts for now) remembering to put on trunks instead wasn’t too much of an issue. But as my trunks get slowly phased out, having a packing harness that doesn’t show even under my briefest of briefs is something I appreciate. That, and it means I don’t have to put up with feeling like my underwear is constricting my thighs on leg day, which is most days given I’m a fencer and go to the gym to support that.

on_tableThe Packer Gear Jock Strap is absolutely going to become my gym day packing harness. But beyond that I’m actually very interested in buying more pairs of the Packer Gear Jock Strap as non-gym day harnesses. Beyond a few odd design choices, it’s a really effective packing harness. The elastic and fabric are both thin enough that I don’t feel like I’m wearing multiple layers of underwear, the placement of soft packers in it feels and looks natural. The fabric between the o-ring and the wearer means you don’t have to have skin-to-packer contact if you don’t want, but the fabric can be pulled aside to fit STP packers. I did initially have some concerns that the cotton-spandex blend fabric might not be as effective at pulling moisture away from the body, but after wearing the Packer Gear Jock Strap on a day long hike, I didn’t find any issues with being sweaty or having any other kind of excess moisture around the crotch.

That said, I do think some caveats need to be given. According to packaging and marketing, the Packer Gear Jock Strap can be used for strap-on sex. I have used it this way, but it’s really not ideal. Compared to the Packer Gear Briefs Harness (review here), the Packer Gear Jock Strap is much looser around the body, even in the same size. This does make it far more comfortable for packing- I had to size up to get the Briefs to be as comfy for daily packing as the Jock Strap- but it also means that I had far less control over the harnessed dildo as a wearer. Don’t get me wrong- if I had an unexpected hookup and the Packer Gear Jock Strap was the only harness I had access to, it’d be perfectly alright. It’s just that there are a bunch of other harnesses that work far better for strap-on play than this one- the Packer Gear Briefs would work better for strap-on/packing flexibility than the Jock strap.

But I’d definitely say the Jock Strap is much better as a packing harness alone. If you’re deciding between the SpareParts Pete Commando and Packer Gear Jock Strap, I’d honestly say they’re pretty tied. With the price difference, the only reason I can think of to recommend the SpareParts Pete Commando over the Packer Gear Jock Strap is if you know you want to use a particularly small packer or if you know you find mid-cheek underwear particularly odd feeling to wear. Other than that, I’d say go for the Packer Gear Jock Strap. It’s a really simple product, but it’s really effective for soft packing and at an affordable price.
