Review: Sir Richard’s CONTROL Rim Joy

I asked SheVibe if I could review the Sir Richard CONTROL Rim Joy in large part because it seemed so different to every other toy I’ve reviewed before. It just looked so odd—like a cross between the Satisfyer Pro Traveler and the Aria Flutter, but for your butthole—that while the Rim Joy isn’t the first toy I’ve tried that purported to replicate the experience of rimming/anilingus (that’d be the b-Vibe Rimming Plug Petite), I desperately wanted to try it to see what it was like.

The Rim Joy in hand. The nozzle is on, showing only the tip of the toy's tongue-like structureThe Rim Joy is a toy with so, so much going on. Essentially, there’s a little robotic tongue (which mostly avoids uncanny valley territory by being solid black rather than a skin tone. Mostly.) which flicks back and forth to simulate real tongue motion. There’s a silicone nozzle around the tongue that can be removed if you want to use the Rim Joy penetratively, but it also can be used exclusively externally. Also, because the CONTROL Rim Joy is on the more expensive side at $75, it also includes an internal warming feature, that heats the little tongue to body temperature.

Cards on the table, the CONTROL Rim Joy does not replicate the feeling of a rim job. My butthole can absolutely tell the difference between this and somebody actually eating it out. Even with the internal heating on, warming it to body temperature, the Rim Joy is too robotic and steady in the way it moves back and forward to feel like a real tongue.

But even if it’s not realistic, that doesn’t mean it doesn’t feel good. And it does feel good! I’m generally an external anal stimulation person when it comes to rimming irl, and while the Rim Joy does run a lot faster and more steady than an actual tongue would, it’s still closer to the sensation than just using a vibrator would. I was a little worried that the Rim Joy’s motor wouldn’t be powerful enough to keep the tongue in motion during penetration, but didn’t have any problems in use at all—I actually tried holding the tongue in my hand to see how much pressure I needed to prevent the motor from working, and had to use a surprisingly large amount!

The thing is, the more I used the Rim Joy, the more I thought about other ways I could get the same or similar sensations. For penetrative play, there’s the earlier mentioned b-Vibe Rimming Plug, which provides more variation in direction of movement than the Rim Joy and feels closer to actual rimming as a result. For external play, my Le Wand Petite and Curve attachment would stimulate the same areas, even if it didn’t give the exact same kind of sensations. It’s not that I hate the way the Rim Joy feels, because I don’t. It’s more that the Rim Joy is a very limited use toy, and even though IMO no sex toy can actually replicate a partnered sex act perfectly, there’s still enough of a difference to be noticeable. And then from there, what is the Rim Joy offering that other toys can’t, especially if other toys are more flexible in how they can be used?

The Rim Joy standing on its endOn the topic of flexibility, the Rim Joy doesn’t really feel like a rim job, but you know what it actually does do a pretty decent job of replicating? Cunnilingus, or at least the kind I personally like to receive. There’s still a limitation on what the Rim Joy can do—there’s no variation in the back-and-forward motion of the ‘tongue’—but what it can do is surprisingly effective at bringing me to orgasm. And hell, it feels more like oral sex than other toys I’ve tried that claim to be able to replicate this, like the Sqweel. I wouldn’t necessarily recommend it over a more conventional vibrator (the Satisfyer Power Flower would be my shout, especially at $10 cheaper) on the merit of bringing me to orgasm alone, but the more unique sensation was definitely a fun novelty for me.

Would I recommend the Rim Joy? I think the idea is cool and unique, but in practice, other toys are able to deliver the same kind of sensations, including without the loudness that accompanies the Rim Joy[ref]Seriously, it’s super loud[/ref].

If you’re looking for internal stimulation to mimic rimming, I’d say go for something like the b-Vibe Rimming Plug or the Eclipse Rimming Probe. If you’re looking for external stimulation, I’d say a wand vibrator with an attachment like the Wand Essential Nuzzle Tip or Le Wand Petite Curve. While the Rim Joy is a little cheaper than most of these product suggestions, it doesn’t have the same flexibility in use. Unless you’re very specifically looking for a toy for rimming play and only rimming play—and if you are, I think the Rim Joy may not be as realistic as you’re hoping for—you’re probably likely to get more use out of them simply because they can be used to play in more ways than the Rim Joy.
