Review: Mini Halo Extra Powerful Wand Vibrator

On occasion, I talk to my friends who aren’t huge sex nerds about sex toys. This has always been an interesting experience, as I’m what can be referred to as ‘deeply autistic about sex toys’[ref]For real, I am autistic and sex toys are one of my special interests[/ref], and I often have no idea what the average person’s thoughts, feelings, or starting approach to the topic is. In these chats, there’s a few ideas I see popping up again and again, and quite a few of them are to do with wands.

Aside from my own nitpicks about terminology (‘magic wand’ is a specific brand, not a type of sex toy), one of the things that’s always stuck in my head is idea that wands are the Cadillac of sex toys, mostly because it isn’t true. If anything, I’d say that mains powered wands like the Magic Wand or Doxy are the monster trucks of sex toys — big, powerful, and often quite loud. While wands have a ton of benefits (their broad head means they’re easily usable between bodies without needing very specific positioning, as well as on different kinds of bodies), there’s also a lot about these more classic wands that might not work for particular people. They can be quite heavy, and mains powered models less portable than rechargeable ones.

The Mini Halo Extra Powerful Wand Vibrator is really good at packaging most of the good things about wands and relatively few of the bad into a cute, relatively affordable package.

The Mini Halo Extra Powerful Wand Vibrator

So, as head’s up, the Mini Halo Extra Powerful Wand Vibrator is what’s known as a white-label toy. You may see similar — if not identical — toys sold under a few different names. I can’t guarantee that the actual construction of this wand is the same as others that may appear identical. While I would urge you to not assume my feedback applies to every wand that looks similar/the same, you may come across it being sold under a different name.

That said, it being a white-label toy doesn’t mean it’s not nicely constructed! The whole surface is covered with a smooth silicone, with some patterning at the handle to aid with grip. It’s water resistant, USB chargeable, and has a total of 20 combinations of speed/pattern to play with. While my Mini Halo is a pale blue, there’s also options for black, pink, lilac, mint green, and peach.

Neck & Buttons

Neck flexibility is one of the things that wand users tend to be very divided on. Some people prefer flexible necks, finding them more comfortable, while others find that a super flexible neck can make it difficult to get both the intensity and pressure needed to get off. I’m generally in the latter category — when I use vibrators I tend to press them up against my junk very firmly, so having too much give doesn’t work for me. This is always going to be something a wand designer has to choose their favoured direction on, and Mini Halo is a solid middle of the road design. There’s some flexibility, but not too much. This is a bit of a safe choice, but I don’t begrudge the designers for going with it — unless you have a strong preference to either end of the spectrum, you’ll probably be happy here.

The three buttons on the Mini Halo are very distinct and easy to identify and the pattern and intensity buttons are separate, which is my absolute favourite thing as a known pattern hater. This makes it easy for me to avoid anything other than a solid vibration, and also offers more options for people who do want to play with patterns. Their design also makes it very easy to identify which button is which, even without looking down at the wand. Obviously, this makes it easier to use in the dark, but also more accessible in general to some users.

The Mini Halo is — as its name suggests — a little on the small side for a wand, at just under 8 inches long and with a head that’s 1.6 inches wide. This comes with a mix of upsides and downsides, although I’ll freely admit it’s mostly positives. It’s a lot easier to pack into a bag for trips out than something like the Doxy and the smaller head also makes it easier to fit between bodies, so it’s easier to add to penis-in-vagina sex than a larger wand might be.

However, that small head does mean I found it harder to place between bodies in a way that worked for both parties. With something like the Doxy, the large head means I don’t need to be super particular about placement if I’m using it during scissoring, for example. With the small head of the Mini Halo, there’s less wiggle room.

However, that size does come in handy when it comes to weight. The Mini Halo’s relative lightness makes it easier to hold for people with hand strength issues. My most comparable mini wand is the Le Wand Petite, and the Mini Halo definitely feels a little lighter (as well as having comparable vibration quality at a much lower price, but I’ll talk about that in a second).

The Vibrations

So the Mini Halo may be wonderful to hold and very cute as a toy, but neither of those would mean anything if the vibration quality was terrible. Luckily, the Mini Halo has pretty decent vibrations. They’re a little buzzier than my large and/or mains powered wands, but for mini and rechargeable wands they’re pretty impressive. I’m also very impressed that — despite those relatively strong vibrations — they don’t travel into the handle of the wand much, so I don’t end up with an uncomfortably numb hand after use.

The one criticism I would give of the Mini Halo’s vibrations is that there’s very little difference between some of those 20 speeds. In fact, I cannot feel a difference between some of them. It’s mostly fine — the high and low end of the vibration spectrum are very different — but it does make it hard to tell if the vibration intensity has been increased a lot of the time.

Overall

The Mini Halo is not a perfect toy, but it is a really good wand vibrator, especially for its price. If you know you want broader (or more pinpoint) vibrations, it might not be the right vibrator for you. The same might also apply if you know you want to use it between bodies (I’d recommend the broader/larger head of the Doxy instead). However, for most people — and especially for people looking for their first wand — I’d recommend it! I think it’s on par with the Le Wand Petite for me (and it’s replaced that toy in the ‘for hookups you don’t know the tastes of’ go bag my wife and I keep), at a fraction of the price.
