Review: KinkLab Neon Wand

glow-1.pngWhile I’ve played with other kinds of electro-kink gear before and know electroplay is something I enjoy, until recently I didn’t actually own any electroplay gear myself. When SheVibe asked me what I’d like to review, I though for a moment and decided to ask for the KinkLab Neon Wand. While I understood the principle and was curious about them, I hadn’t actually experimented with neon wands myself, and was interested to see what I’d make of the KinkLab Neon Wand.

The KinkLab Neon Wand comes as a kit with the wand itself, and four electrode attachments, and is available in purple and red – colour here referring to the colour of the little sparks between the wand and skin. While the Neon Wand works perfectly with the electrodes provided, there are other attachments available, including the Power Tripper, which I now really want to try out. As my purple Neon Wand came with a US plug, I checked to see if it was safe to use it using a UK/US adaptor, and can confirm that it is.

While I do have experience with electroplay gear, the Neon Wand is very easy to figure out, even for those who don’t. The electrodes have a metal end, which slots into the open end of the handle[ref]For safety reasons, do this while the wand isn’t plugged in[/ref]. There’s a dial at the base of the handle which can be used to increase or decrease intensity, although I’ve found that anything less than 50% intensity just creates noise and light, and no real sensation. The Neon Wand comes with a very thick safety and instruction booklet, and I’d recommend giving this a thorough read before playing with the Neon Wand, but I found the safety suggestions (taking off jewellery, not using it on people with pacemakers etc) pretty intuitive.

While the KinkLab Neon Wand may sound intense, it’s actually reasonably tame in use. I’m very much not a masochist as a bottom even if I am a sadist as a top, but I’ve found the mild-moderate prickling sensation quite pleasant in use. If you’re into heavy sensation and receiving more intense play, I’d actually say the Neon Wand might be a bit mild for you. But if you’re new to electroplay or not that much of a heavy bottom, the Neon Wand can provide enough of a range of intensities to be worth playing with.

I’m generally a D-type[ref]A broad term for the top/dominant person in BDSM, as opposed to the submissive or bottom s-type[/ref] when it comes to play, and in my own play I’ve generally used my Neon Wand on other people rather than had it used on myself. However, I’ve found I actually really enjoy using the Neon Wand on myself during solo sex. There’s no power exchange to it, but the physical sensation is really nice. At the intense end, the feeling sort of reminds me of being tattooed, which is something I tend to actually quite enjoy. The Neon Wand is super versatile in terms of what kinds of scenes it can be a part of. During partnered sex, I’ve used the Neon Wand for sensation play with no power dynamic, medical play, and power-exchange scenes all the way from soft and gentle to mean and harsh.

The four electrodes provided are named The Comb, The Mushroom, The Tongue, and the 90 Degree Probe, each creating different kinds of stimulation.

I didn’t actually like the Comb electrode too much. While visually super interesting, because the wand’s power is spread over a large surface area, I found the sensations way too mild, even on high power. Even the bottoms I’ve played with who prefer sensual domination rather than painful have said it feels at most like a mild tickle.

Because of the over-mildness of the Comb, the Mushroom is where I generally start when playing with the Neon Wand. It has a smaller surface area than the Comb, meaning that the sensations are more intense, but still milder than the other electrodes. My favourite way to use the Mushroom is to run it down somebody’s ass crack[ref]I’m sorry, I could not think of a sexy way to say ass crack[/ref], between their cheeks, and around their hole.

The Tongue feels more intense than the Mushroom to me, so I generally don’t use it around buttholes or genitals except as a halfway point between the Mushroom and the 90 Degree probe. I generally tend to use the Tongue on broader surfaces, like thighs and butt cheeks, and especially like running it on the inner thighs.

Because the bulb on the 90 Degree Probe is tiny, it’s the most intense of the electrodes provided. I do actually tend to use the 90 Degree Probe on genitals, but that’s specifically because I use the 90 Degree Probe more for scenes and play where pain or a more mean power dynamic is the point.

While not all the probes worked for me, there’s enough variety that you can try out a variety of sensations (especially in combination with different intensities) and see what works for you. What works for me and my partners may not be what works for you, and that’s completely fine.

I’m a big fan of the Neon Wand, if you hadn’t guessed by now. My only two caveats would be that the Neon Wand produces quite a lot of noise, and in use produces a smell. I don’t mind these- I actually find the loud buzz adds to scenes to me- but I think it’s worth taking into consideration your feelings on these before buying the Neon Wand, especially given the $99.99 price is quite an investment for most people.

Aside from those though, I have nothing but praise for the KinkLab Neon Wand. It’s an incredibly versatile piece of gear, capable of being as tame or gentle as its user wants it to be, and capable of being incorporated into all kinds of play, including that with little or no D/s dynamic. If you’re totally new to electroplay, I’d definitely recommend it as a perfect point of introduction, but there’s still plenty for more intermediate and advanced electroplay kinksters.

If you’d like your own KinkLab Neon Wand, you can buy one from SheVibe for $99.99
