Review: John Thomas Toys Koi Toy

Does anyone remember the film The Shape Of Water? While problematic in how it depicted disability, it did mean that even my personal Twitter account’s feed was clogged with discussions of monsterfucking for a good few months, and was the first thing I thought of when I saw the Koi Toy.

The Koi Toy dildo from John Thomas Toys is meant to resemble the genitals of a human/fish hybrid, with a fish scale texture over the shaft, small but very pronounced testicles, and an uncut foreskin. I think the Koi Toy might actually be the first dildo I have that has an uncut foreskin (although do note this isn’t movable), which is something I hadn’t noticed in my collection before! The scale pattern also kinda reminds me of dragons or the scale pattern that draconic sorcerers get in Dungeons and Dragons, hence the collection of dice I photographed them with.

foreskinLike the other toys from John Thomas Toys I’ve reviewed, the Koi Toy is silicone and available in various sizes, from small to extra large. I asked to review the small size, which stands at 7 inches tall total, with an insertable length of 5.6 inches.

The Koi Toy has a hole in the base making it Vac-U-Lock compatible, but as I don’t own any Vac-U-Lock attachments, I didn’t have the opportunity to test this. It is harness compatible and (unlike the other John Thomas Toys dildo I’ve reviewed), I’m comfortable enough with the flare of the base to say it’s anal safe.

There are also two options for silicone firmness, although both blends of silicone that John Thomas Toys offer are relatively firm. I received the Koi Toy in a medium firmness, which is the softer of the two firmnesses currently offered, with a soft due to be added in May of this year. There is some slight squish to the silicone, but I found I needed to apply a lot of pressure to make it move. This silicone also has some drag, which meant I had to use quite a lot of lube in use.

The small size Koi Toy is a little smaller than a lot of the dildos I use outside of reviewing, but I think it was the right choice given the firmness and the texture. There’s only the slightest curve in the Koi Toy’s shaft, so it doesn’t really give much g-spot or prostate stimulation. However, this does mean I find it more comfortable to thrust. The silicone isn’t the most draggy silicone I’ve used (that goes to Fun Factory’s lube guzzling silicone), but it’s enough that I very much feel the drag of the scales in use. I can’t make out much of the specific texture though, with the scales feeling like what I can only describe as sensory white noise. I find the sensation pleasant, but if you’re looking for a super pronounced texture where you can feel every variation, the mostly even scale pattern of the Koi Toy is not it.

in_handI personally had a mild preference for using the Koi Toy anally over vaginally, but that’s mostly because my vag is super sensitive when it comes to texture at the moment. The Koi Toy is about as much texture as I can take vaginally, so I can definitely attest to the Koi Toy for people who want to experiment with more slight texture. The base of the Koi Toy is solid enough to straddle and ride the toy when I use it anally (and this is something I think would work even better on the larger sizes), but I’ve mostly used it holding it in my hand. And while I haven’t tried out the Vac-u-Lock compatible base with an actual Vac-u-Lock attachment, I have found some use for it here- the base of the Koi Toy is pretty small compared to other dildos I have around the same size, and I can struggle with getting a grip around the base. While it’s totally not intended for this, the hole in the base gives a little bit of a handhold, making it easier and more comfortable to thrust the Koi Toy.

The Koi Toy is harness compatible and I, of course, tried using it this way. I definitely prefer straight shafts for harnessable toys personally, as I find it much more intuitive to thrust with this kind of toy compared to toys with curved shafts. The heavily textured nature of the Koi Toy does mean I needed to adjust my stroke though, with more gentle and shallow thrusts than if I was using a less heavily textured toy.

on_endWhile it was definitely easier to use the Koi Toy harnessed than toys I have that are more textured (the Tentacle, also by John Thomas Toys, is a dildo I’d be far less likely to use harnessed because it’s so much more heavily textured than the Koi Toy), the difference between the Koi Toy and the non-textured dildos I have is noticeable during harnessed use. I wouldn’t say it’s not possible to comfortable use the Koi Toy harnessed or that I wouldn’t recommend it, but the texture is definitely something to bear in mind if using it this way. I also think it’s worth noting that the small size Koi Toy is pretty short, with some of that length being lost when harnessed. I personally prefer longer dildos for strap-on play because it gives me more flexibility with positioning and angling.

I feel like a broken record, but the extent to which I’d recommend the Koi Toy really is very dependent on your preferences when it comes to texture. For those who want some slight texture to their toys but aren’t into really intense texture, the relative evenness of the Koi Toy’s scales is an excellent mild texture, although if you’re super sensitive to texture you may find it a bit too much to thrust with or use in a harness. But if you’re a texture lover in a more intense sense, I’d probably point you to some of John Thomas Toys’ other offerings (like the Beastli or Xtro).
