Review: John Thomas Toys Original Tentacle Dildo

A tentacle dildo is the first kind of sex toy I remember specifically wanting. The moment I discovered they were a thing that existed I’d just started testosterone, was going through a delayed puberty, and had discovered tentacle smut was my favourite flavour of horny fan fiction- yes, I was That Teenager. The idea that I could have could fuck myself with an actual tentacle or strap one into a harness and fuck somebody else with one absolute blew my mind. I wanted a tentacle dildo so, so badly. And while it took me a while to get my hands on one, two and a half years of sex blogging and quite a few dildos later, I finally have my hands on one.

John Thomas Toys is a UK based dildo manufacturer that I only discovered recently, who produce a variety of fantasy, non-fantasy, and even non-representational silicone dildos and plugs. While a lot of their wares definitely cater for the size royalty among us, small sizes are available. Their Original Tentacle, for example, is available in small, medium, large, and extra large, with lengths ranging from 7.3 inches to 16 inches and with shaft circumferences ranging from 6.8 inches to 12.5 inches. Additionally, John Thomas Toys provides a choice of two levels of silicone firmness for the Tentacle- a supersoft medium or a firm. While I wish I was size royalty, I know who I am and what my limits are, so the Tentacle I received for review is a small in supersoft medium.

While the Tentacle only comes in one colour option, it is a gorgeous colour option. Four colours are stacked on top of each other- a light pink at the very tip of the tentacle, then a hot pink, a lilac, and finally a purple towards the base of the dildo. It’s not quite the bisexual pride colours, but it’s close enough that somebody did comment ‘bi tentacle’ on my first Instagram post of the Tentacle.

The Tentacle has been just as fun to incorporate into role-play and fantasy as I hoped it would! I’m generally not a bath masturbator, but I actually have taken to using this dildo underwater. One of my fuckbuddies and I had also been playing with the idea of a scene where I role-played as a tentacle monster for a while, and we actually got around to it with this toy.

The Tentacle does have some bend and squish, but even though I chose the softer of the two silicone firmnesses, I wouldn’t say it’s particularly soft silicone. As well as a branded storage bag, the Tentacle also comes with a hole in its base that makes it compatible with Vac-U-Lock attachments. While I don’t have any of those attachments myself at the moment, the option always remains open in future.

I do have an issue with the size of the Tentacle’s base. While there is a difference in the width between the bottom of the tentacle shaft and the base- the bottom of the shaft has a circumference of 6.8 inches while the base has one of 7.5 inches- this doesn’t feel like enough of a flare for me to be comfortable recommending the Tentacle for anal use. I did briefly try it anally because I figured that was one of the responsibilities I have as a somebody who basically tells stories about sex toys semi-professionally. While the Tentacle felt good- not least because I’ve been way more into anal play than anything to do with my front for a while- I only ended up inserting a little bit of the entire length of the dildo because of the nervousness I had around the base.

I am a little disappointed by this, but didn’t find the base size was an issue with harness use, which I feared it might be. The Tentacle was able to fit into my SpareParts Joque and Sh! Leather Harness comfortably, and I didn’t have any fear that it might slip out during use. I think this is in part because the base is quite thick- it won’t bend and get pulled out of the front of an O-ring. While I don’t thrust with the Tentacle particular hard or fast because of its level of texturing, I feel like I definitely could without it become unstable.

Because I didn’t really trust the Tentacle for anal use, I tried it in the front. I actually am having quite a bit of trouble taking anything of size in my front at the moment, and I think that might be long term at this point. But I persevered with a lot of lube and a lot of patience, and actually found that the tapered form of the Tentacle made insertion a lot easier than I expected, although the texture was very intense in use. The almost dotted surface in combination with the stacked rings shape and the pronounced suckers did use up a whole lot of lube, but created a ton of sensation when inserted.

While the curve of the Tentacle didn’t do much for me g-spot wise, I did get some g-spot stimulation out of it when using it on a partner. Outside of a harness, I was able to angle the Tentacle in a way that was effective. It definitely isn’t the most intense g-spot toy I’ve used, especially with such a thin and tapered head, and I wouldn’t recommend picking it out if you’re looking for a g-spot toy specifically- the strength of the Tentacle is definitely in its texture. The strength of the Tentacle is definitely in its texture. I’m glad I chose the softer firmness that John Thomas Toys offer because even in the small size, I think the firm would be too much for me.

4One thing the texture is great for is frottage. It’s actually been a while since grinding on dildos has been a big part of my solo sex life, as I’ve generally moved on to sleeve use. But I couldn’t resist trying it with the Tentacle and it works really well- running my dick between the suckers on the Tentacles underside doesn’t feel quite like a sleeve, but it’s a really nice sensation on its own terms!

I really wish I didn’t have the issues with the Tentacle’s base that I do. I’m very much an anal person at the moment, and much as I would love to use it as an anal toy, I don’t trust that base enough to be safe. Obviously that’s not an issue if you’re you’re looking for a toy for vaginal use, but I feel like it is worth noting. I personally would definitely prefer it if the Tentacle had a wider and more flared based.

With that caveat, I’d still recommend the Tentacle if you’re looking for a tentacle dildo that’s super textured rather than on the smooth side. If you’re size royalty, definitely look at the various sizes that the Tentacle is offered in- just because the small is the right size for me doesn’t mean it is for you!
