Review: Hot Octopuss JETT

My partner has always insisted that vibrators don’t really do much for her. She likes sleeves perfectly fine, but aside from briefly co-owning a Magic Wand Rechargeable with a past partner, vibrators are something that she’s never really been interested in.

After we used the Hot Octopuss JETT together for the first time, she turned to me and said ‘Oh. Maybe I do like vibrators after all’. And if that’s not an endorsement I don’t know what is.

About My Partner

For some quick context, my partner is a trans woman who’s been on HRT for about four years (with some breaks because accessing trans healthcare is a crapshoot). While some people on estrogenising HRT experience difficulty maintaining or getting an erection, this hasn’t really been an issue for her. However, Hot Octopuss does specifically design toys to work for those with erectile dysfunction, if that’s part of the impact HRT has had on your body.

The Hot Octopuss JETT

So the JETT is a sort of cock-ring/vibrator hybrid. There’s two wired bullet vibrators—a buzzier one and a rumblier one, which Hot Octopuss calls the treble and the bass—which are connected to the combination battery pack and remote. There’s also a silicone sleeve with three holes—two for each of the bullets and one for the wearer’s penis. Unlike a conventional cockring, the JETT is worn against the frenulum rather than at the base of the penis. While this totally makes sense for your standard issue penises, it might not be a great fit for those who’ve had phalloplasty, as the frenulum doesn’t tend to be the most sensitive party of post-phalloplasty penises. Each of the two bullets can be controlled separately in terms of intensity, although the same button controls pattern (there’s 10 options) for both bullets.

At £49.95, JETT is significantly more affordable than many of Hot Octopuss’ other penis toys—the next up in terms of price is the £64.95 Pocket Pulse. It’s still not a ‘budget toy’ per se, but it is more pocket-friendly than some other options.

In Use

I feel like I should start with the caveats and ‘not so greats’ about this toy, if only to get them out of the way quickly. The JETT is battery powered rather than rechargeable. While rechargeable batteries are a thing—and I did try using them first—it turns out the rechargeable AA batteries I could get my hands on were slightly larger in diameter and in length than a standard AA battery size. And uh, they got stuck. To its credit, the JETT is very easy to take apart, remove stuck batteries from, and then reassemble.

A lot of people have mentioned using the JETT to get from flaccid to hard, but this hasn’t really worked for us, as it’s really difficult to actually get my partner’s penis into the ring if she’s not hard, especially as the cockring is a little tight. While it can be used hands free, this can be a little awkward in some positions, owing to the weight of the bullets. It’s also not waterproof, which does limit some of the wheres and hows of how it can be used. Also, on a less technical note, I hate the marketing term ‘guybrator’. It’s just unnecessarily gendered. Finally, neither of us are big fans of patterns on toys in general, but here my partner found it not just a gimmick but actively annoying—the two silver bullets are both quite jerky when they start up, and when the patterns come to complete stops and starts, this jerking motion really throws her off.

But other than that? It’s really fucking good.

The vibrations from the bass penetrate really deeply, but in a way that’s not lost when using the treble as well. There’s a lot of interesting ways to combine the two frequencies and, as my partner said, ‘if you’re not somebody who really knows about the difference between high and low frequencies, this will make you learn the difference very quickly. But like in a good way’.

I’ve seen a few bits of copy floating around that boast orgasms with the Hot Octopuss JETT in less than five minutes. This means it works really well for forced-orgasm play, as well as just generally works really well for the ways we want to do kink.

As a couple, we suffer from a condition known as ‘both being heavily-dominant-leaning tops’, and while we do switch it can be difficult to find things that work for me as a top and her as a bottom, given anal penetration isn’t something she enjoys. Forced orgasms work really well for us when I top, and the fact the JETT allows those forced orgasms to be hands-free in a way that using a sleeve isn’t really opens up some of the possibilities. I can use my hands to play with her breasts, or tie rope, or pull hair. I strongly believe that all sex toys are couples’ sex toys, but the JETT is one of the toys that I think has more possibilities and benefits within the context of coupled sex than it does solo sex. The control box system might be a little mechanical for some tastes, but I actually really like it—I feel very powerful holding it.

While the JETT is designed for people with penises, I wanted to play around with it as well, and I’m so glad I did. My general go-to for external sensation is the We-Vibe Tango X, and I know that I have a strong preference for pinpoint rumbly vibrations. The silver bullets in the JETT are rounded, and I was a little worried they’d be too round for that pinpoint stimulation that I want, but I was really pleasantly surprised. I knew the treble wasn’t going to do much for me—if anything—but the bass is just so fucking good. I did a side by side of the bass part of the JETT and the Tango X and honestly I think they’re very comparable! And the JETT doesn’t have the same habit the Tango X does of becoming less rumbly as its battery drains, so extra points.

Overall

The Hot Octopuss JETT is really good, if you couldn’t tell from the fact it made my partner reconsider the idea that she didn’t like vibrators. And while it wasn’t created with bodies like mine in mind, it still works really well in terms of what I want from a vibrator. My only real and significant beef with it is the fact it’s battery powered rather than rechargeable. I do also think Hot Octopuss are missing an opportunity when it comes to emphasising the potential use of the JETT during partnered sex (especially sex with D/s dynamics given their BDSM Hub is very separate from the sex toy section of their site), given that’s where it really shone for us. But if the batteries aren’t a dealbreaker for you, I can’t recommend the JETT enough.
