Review: Unicorn Collaborators Hand Harness

Can you have a crush on a harness? Because if so, I can’t describe the way I’ve felt about the Unicorn Collaborators Hand Harness any other way. I’ve vaguely orbited it for a while—looking at it sitting in my Etsy favourites, occasionally adding it to my basket before removing it again, looking at it wistfully. I’ve wanted a hand-harness for pretty much as long as I’ve known that I enjoy topping and using toys on other people, and one made out of leather by a queer company, adjustable for both left and right hands? The absolute dream. When SheVibe started stocking the Unicorn Collaborators Hand Harness—in both red and black—I knew it had to go on my review list, and having now tested it… it is every bit as as good as I dreamed it would be.

The Unicorn Collaborators Hand Harness

So the Unicorn Collaborators Hand Harness—on Unicorn Collaborators’ own store they also call it the Knucklefucker, which I love but also totally understand not including on the SheVibe listing—is pretty much what it sounds like; a strap-on harness for the hand. Made of leather—and unff the leather smell is amazing—it consists of a back plate/body, a long strap, and two interchangeable o-rings. The strap fits through slits in the backing plate, hook around one side of the o-ring and then—tightening around where the hand will be—do the same on the other side of the O-ring, finally looping back to fasten into place through two d-rings.

It sounds more complicated than it is—while I was marginally confused the very first time I used the hand harness, it now feels really intuitive. The Samtastic video on SheVibe’s harness product page is also really good at explaining it clearly, so check it out if you’re still confused.

The two included o-rings will work for a variety of dildo sizes—they have diameters of 1.5 and 2 inches—but it’s very easy to swap them out for your own if you find you need a smaller or larger o-ring for the toys you want to use. For what it’s worth, I’ve found the two included o-rings work well for pretty much every toy I own. I also really appreciate that the included o-rings are welded steel—a lot of the time, I find included o-rings are silicone, which I don’t really like as they stretch, with a potential risk of a toy falling out.

Both the black and red version of this harness—and I was really tempted by the gorgeous red colour—are the same price, at $69[ref]Nice![/ref]. Because of the adjustability of the harness, it can be worn in a variety of different ways—on the palm, over the knuckles, or on the back of the hand.

Why A Hand Harness?

Because hand strap-on harnesses are a less common type of harness—I actually only know of one other hand harness off the top of my head—I wanted to take some time to explain why somebody might be interested in them. Unlike using a dildo by hand, the Hand Harness doesn’t involve gripping or holding, making it easier for those who have difficulty with grip.

Even for people who don’t generally have trouble with grip, using a hand harness can make using a dildo on a partner less tiring—when I hold a dildo to use on a partner, I find my fingers get tired way quicker than my arm does. When compared to a more conventional strap-on harness, a hand harness doesn’t require hip movement and also can give a bit more freedom with positioning, making it easier to touch or play with a partner in other ways. And while I’m highlighting partnered use here because that’s how I tend to use harnesses, the Unicorn Collaborators Hand Harness can make using toys solo a lot easier as well.

Using The Unicorn Collaborators Hand Harness

So one limitation I did find this harness had was toy size and heaviness. In fairness, I did deliberately choose the largest toys in my collection—most of which wouldn’t be held securely in place by a conventional strap-on harness either—to test the Unicorn Collaborators Hand Harness’ limitations. With very big toys—I’m talking my Mr Hankey’s Toys Rentman and large Real Supple dildo—the weight of the toy pulls down on the straps and makes it unstable. These are edge cases, and almost all my dildos did fit comfortably into the harness, but it’s something to be aware of.

With that one limitation out of the way, everything else I have to say about this harness is wonderful. A partner of mine sometimes has issues with grip, and found having a harness do the work of holding a toy in place alleviated her discomfort and worry about losing her grip. She also—and I can corroborate this having also used it to top—found it far more comfortable than holding the base of a toy, especially for toys with balls or oddly shaped bases. I generally do prefer placing this harness with the pad on the palm of my hands, as it’s not only super comfortable but also allows me to use fingers for external stimulation, but there is something really hot about resting the harness on my knuckles. There’s just a rough sexy energy to wearing it like that. As my nesting partner put it, ‘you can wear it on your knuckles for when you want to punch the pussy…I said that as a joke, but I’m actually turned on now’.

Something I didn’t expect about wearing this harness is how much it feels like I’m being ‘freed up’ compared to holding a toy. I know the practical difference in action between using a harnessed toy and a held toy isn’t huge, but not having to focus on holding a toy in place feels like it frees up a lot of brainpower and focus. I feel a lot more present with my partners with a harnessed toy compared to a held toy, and find that intimacy seems to flow a lot smoother and easier. It’s easier to find good angles compared to holding the toy and—as a person who tends to clench his legs together when he’s about to orgasm—my partner did specifically mention she found the harness made topping me significantly more comfortable. I think the best way of putting it is that the hand harness is very like the Liberator Wedge— the actual difference it brings to sex is quite small, but that little change makes all the difference.

While the Unicorn Collaborators Hand Harness is a hand harness specifically, with the level of adjustability its strap has, I couldn’t help but try it in a few other ways. Some didn’t work out—using it to attach toys to a thigh and cushion didn’t work out—but one unintended use I found really worked was a boot harness.

Unicorn Collaborators actually do have a dedicated boot harness, but because it relies on a strap both around the ankle and between the heel and sole of a shoe, it doesn’t work for all shoe styles. I tend to wear platform combat boots, which only have a single solid sole, for example. Wrapping the Unicorn Collaborators Hand Harness’ strap around the ankle of a combat boot works pretty well at securing it in place. We also tried it on a high heeled boot, fitting the strap between the heel and sole. While it’s not quite as secure as a dedicated boot harness would be, it works remarkably well. And without trying it, I wouldn’t have found out that there is something just incredibly hot about mixing a bootblacking scene with a dildo blowjob scene.

Overall

If you’re not put off by the fact it’s leather and you use toys by hand a lot during partnered sex, get the Unicorn Collaborators Hand Harness. The change it brings may be small, but it has a huge positive impact. The hand harness has already made its way to my bedside table, and I don’t think I’ll ever purposefully go back to using dildos on partners without using a harness. I can’t recommend it enough, and I’ll definitely keep an eye out for a vegan alternative for those who aren’t comfortable with leather products.
