Review: Funphoria Quasar

Fantasy sex toys are an ever expanding market, and I feel like I discover a new company every week or so. A very recently new-to-me company is Funphoria, a Swedish based company that—at the time of writing—have two dildo models, each available in three different sizes and colours (although they will be releasing a plug called Nebula). First, there’s Orion, a slightly simpler design with less heavy texturing than Quasar, which has a ‘ribbed’ design up the shaft.

The two toys are relatively similar, sitting in a spot I’d call ‘soft fantasy’ design wise. There’s some fantasy elements—the pointed tip on both and the ridges on Quasar—but they’re not super out there in terms of design. While the names are space themed and the packaging definitely fits the theme—I am not normally a packaging person when it comes to sex toys, but I think it’s super cute!—I don’t really see this necessarily reflected in the designs themselves. They could be alien inspired designs for sure, but I can also see them being more dragon-adjacent, or even just abstractly non-human for somebody who’s not into that.

Both the Orion—which I’ll be posting a separate review for soon—and the Quasar are silicone, and have a very smooth matte finish to them. It does pick up lint quite a bit, but I still really like the texture— it has a little bit of drag, but not nearly as much as some of the other matte toys I have. Like Orion, Quasar comes in three colour options— a black called ‘moonless night’, a pink called ‘pink lemonade’, and a blue called ‘pool day’. It also comes in three sizes, with the small size having a length of 5.5 inches and a circumference of 5.3 inches, the medium having a length of 6.3 inches and circumference of 6.2 inches, and the large having a length of 7 inches and a circumference of 6.8 cm. The Quasar that I received for review is a small in the colour ‘pool day’.

Firstly, I want to say that the Quasar (and the Orion actually, but that’s for next week) is made of pretty firm silicone, especially compared to most fantasy toys, which tend towards the softer end. I’m not sure exactly what shore silicone it is but did do a squish comparison with a bunch of other toys in my collection, where it was slightly squishier than the 20A shore two-coloured Yum Yum dildo but firmer than a 10A toy I tested it against. Again, this isn’t a specific measurement and really is reminding me that I should get a shore durometer, but it gives some indication of the firmness. The shaft can bend and the surface does have some squish with pressure, but it takes quite a lot of pressure to squish.

Firmness is something a lot of people really enjoy, and I do think it’s worth noting that the Quasar is actually firmer than a lot of ‘firm’ fantasy toy options, which are generally around a 10A shore. I am just not one of those people when it comes to vaginal use, and while the texture is pretty mild on the Quasar compared to some other toys I’ve tried, it was still uncomfortable for me vaginally. This very much is a ‘your milage may vary’ situation though, and some people prefer firmer silicone vaginally, especially for g-spot stimulation (although this is another thing I don’t really like—whoops—and the Quasar’s tip is a bit pointier than g-spotting dildos tend to be). But I, personally, really did not like the Quasar vaginally.

The flip side of the Quasar not being well suited to me vaginally, though, is that I really liked using it anally. While I love squishy silicone in my butt just as much as vaginally, one downside of softer anal toys is they tend to be a bit more difficult to insert. The Quasar does not have any of those issues. That firmness and the pointed tip make it exceptionally easy to insert. My general preferences when it comes to anal toys are ‘short but thick’, and while the small Quasar doesn’t have a huge amount of girth, the firmness and the texturing make it feel more substantial. I also really like shallow sensation—the kind of sensation that anal beads give works really well for me—and while it’s not quite as pronounced as with beads, the ‘ribbing’ on the Quasar’s shaft gave the same kind of ‘opening and closing’ sensation. I didn’t get a huge amount out of the dorsal vein-esque texture on the underside of the shaft, but I’m not mad about it.

When it comes to strap-on play, my opinion is a bit mixed. The round base is comfortable in a harness (and I am so glad not to be reviewing a toy with a suction cup, which is quite a lot of my To Be Reviewed pile at the moment). However, all dildos lose a bit of length if they’re harnessed, and the small size Quasar is so short anyway that the length that’s left to work with isn’t really actionable. You could use it in a harness, but I struggled to do full movements and not have the toy fall out. That said, this isn’t an issue with the overall design so much as just an issue with this size, so I don’t think it would extend to the large size (and it doesn’t impact my medium Orion nearly as much).

Aside from the silicone firmness—which, in fairness is mostly a personal preference and means that the Quasar suits different types of play—my only qualm with it is the logo near the dildo base. Because it’s indented into the surface of the toy, I do worry about cleaning being difficult and gunk building up inside it, especially int he thin lines of some letters and in very thin parts of the Funphoria logo, like the bull tail and horns. Because the Quasar is silicone it can be sanitised by boiling or putting through the dishwasher, so it’s not as much of an issue here as it would be with porous materials, but I’m still a bit concerned about how effective a normal clean (with warm water and soap) will be.

While Funphoria’s silicone firmness really doesn’t work for me vaginally—especially with the Quasar’s texture—I really like it anally. If you know you prefer silicone with a bit more squish (for one specific type of penetration or at all), the Quasar isn’t a good match for you. I do think the head would also be more effective for g-spot or prostate stimulation (which is something firmer silicone lends itself too) if it were a little broader, although I do concede that would result in losing a bit of the fantasy visual. That said, if you like firmer silicone anally and want something a bit more anal bead-adjacent, but in the form of a dildo, I think the Quasar works really well and would recommend it for that!
