Review: BS Atelier Bi + Trans Pride Max

I think I’ve made it pretty obvious that pride flag dildos are absolutely my jam. I’ve only owned trans pride dildos before (I have reviews of the other two, from Blush Novelties and Geeky Sex Toys on this site), but I’ve been making heart eyes at toys in other pride flag colour schemes that apply to me the entire time. So when BS Atelier offered to create a unique dildo for me, with both the bi and trans pride flags as part of the colour scheme, I jumped at the chance. While BS Atelier offers their Max dildo in many pride flags by default (including the genderqueer flag, bisexual flag, lesbian flag, transgender flag, polyamory flag, and leather flag), having a custom toy made for me was just awesome, in every way.

The fact that BS Atelier was able to offer me a custom toy is because of the nature of BS Atelier as a company. They’re a small, independent, artisan company based in Madrid, and every product they make is designed, manufactured, and distributed by the company in house. All of their products are made from silicone, and all colours used come from medical grade pigments. They’re an awesome sex-positive, LGBTQ+ friendly, feminist company, and I’m really glad I get to work with them.

inhand.pngThe Max is larger than some of BS Atelier’s other offerings, with a total length of 8.5 inches, and an insertable length of 7.5 inches. It has a long, elongated head, which is 2.6 inches long and quite pronounced. If the Max sounds a little big for you, BS Atelier also produce the Alex dildo, which is a smaller cousin of the Max. The flared base makes the Max both anal safe and harness compatible. While my bi/trans Max isn’t available as a standard product, you can buy a trans or bi pride Max for 116.99 or 110 (the price difference is due to the number of stripes), directly from BS Atelier. If you’re in the US, SheVibe is a retailer who carries some (although not all) of their product offerings.

I’m honestly not sure how to describe the firmness of the Max’s silicone. It’s not solid- I can bend the shaft so that the head tip touches the base, but it’s not particularly squishy. The surface is untextured and pretty smooth, and it has a matte finish. The finish means it’s one of those dildos that (at least for me, especially as I’ve dried out recently) definitely needs lube, but works excellently with lube. The lack of texture means the dildo stays slick for longer, and this is one of the reasons I really liked the Max for anal.

That’s not to say I didn’t use the Max vaginally. The time that the Max arrived was actually really convenient, as my partner had taken a little bit of a break from vaginal penetration for dysphoria reasons. While he’s usually able to take quite large dildos vaginally, it’s still taking him a little bit of time to work up to it. The BS Atelier Max is the perfect point for where he is now, the girth enough to make him feel full without needing a huge amount of work up. And it’s about the right point for me too. I’ve been having vaginal penetration a lot less recently because of dysphoria reasons, and have also decreased the sizes of dildos I’m choosing to use vaginally when I do choose to have it. The Max is the perfect average for me- I can use it without a huge amount of warm up, so long as I use lube, and I still feel stretched out and full in a way that’s satisfying.

The Max isn’t as good at g-spotting as I thought it would be, unfortunately. I thought the curve of the Max’s shaft would make it really good at very precise g-spotting, but it has a too thin and long head for my partner’s g-spot. It does stimulate it, but it’s not the kind of precision g-spotting that he gets from the Nofrilldo G.

That said, the coronal head on the Max is something I really enjoy in use, and I don’t think my feelings on the Max would be as warm as they are if it was a more standard g-spotting dildo shape. When thrusting, the longer and flatter coronal head feels almost like I’m being fingered, as opposed to the more intense ‘pop’ sensations I get from dildos with more defined heads, like the Fun Factory Big Boss. It’s a really unique sensation, and not one I really get from any other of my dildos.

The Max definitely shines most for me as a dildo for thrusting, rather than for insertion. This doesn’t surprise me, given the Max isn’t textured and due to its shape, but it’s one of the reasons I’ve found I really love using the Max as a strap-on dildo. I was honestly a little skeptical about using the Max for harness play at first, given some things I’ve heard about the base shape on the Max’s smaller cousin, the Alex. Betty Butch (a great sex blogger, who you should follow) mentioned the base on their Alex was too thin and flexible for harnessing.

I was worried the same would apply to my Max, but happily, this wasn’t the case. The base on my Max is thick and sturdy, meaning I have no worries about using it in a harness or for anal play.

The base isn’t perfectly round, but is a sort of teardrop shape. This did mean it took me some time to become used to the way the Max fit against my body in a harness, and my poor pubic bone did suffer a little in the meantime. I think that’s definitely a feature of the kind of sex I have rather than something general though, as I tend to be a harsh pounder. I did get used to the way it fit my body relatively quickly, and although I wouldn’t say the teardrop shape makes it any more comfortable in a harness, it doesn’t make it particularly uncomfortable either. It just is.

As a sidenote, I’ve found the Max works really, weirdly well for missionary strap-on sex for me. I’m not sure what it is, but missionary is a position my partner and I struggle to make comfortable or enjoy. Finding angles that stimulate him as a bottom while remaining comfortable for me as a top is something we can struggle with, and we tend to default to doggy when it comes to penetrative sex because of this. But the Max seems to work weirdly well for missionary sex between us.

I can find an position that’s comfortable for me to stay in and an angle and thrust style that I can maintain, while still having the thrusts be both comfortable and enjoyable for my partner. It’s especially impressive given my partner has recently had an IUD inserted and is still getting some cramping, so penetrative sex with other dildos can and has been difficult or painful. We haven’t had issues with the Max at all though, even in the normally problematic missionary position. I think this is a particular quirk of our bodies more than anything else, but definitely felt it was worth mentioning in passing.

The only negative thing I have to say about my Max is that mine did have a few small flaws in the silicone. They’re small nicks, and while it’s not something that bothers me given that silicone is sanitisable, and because I know BS Atelier is a small indie studio, but I can definitely understand it being enough to turn somebody off the Max. Especially given the price tag.

That said, the price tag on the Max is, in my opinion, absolutely worth it. If you’re looking for more aggressive g-spot or prostate stimulation, the Max isn’t what you’re looking for. But it’s super comfortable for thrusting if that’s your style when it comes to dildos. It’s also a dildo I’ve found really suits me as a sort of anal-intermediate person- I’m not an anal beginner, but I’m still not a huge anal expert. If you’re looking for a harnessable dildo, I’d recommend the Max- it definitely has the advantage over other pride dildo models from BS Atelier in terms of harness-ability. The Max may not be cheap, but it is gorgeous, and if your tastes in dildos match up with what it can offer, I’d recommend a Max in any of the pride line colours as beautiful fuckable art.

You can purchase a Max in your preferred pride colours from BS Atelier, or choose from a smaller selection of pride colours from SheVibe
