Review: Sergeant Major Plug

The Sergeant Major Butt Plug from John Thomas Toys (who made the Tentacle Dildo I’ve reviewed before) is the first anal toy I’ve reviewed in a while, and I think I’ve progressed a lot in my understand of what makes a good anal toy since the last time. While I haven’t been reviewing them, I’ve used a lot of anal toys in the past 7 months, and I was really excited to take the things I’ve learnt and apply them to a review.

The Sergeant Major – like the other John Thomas Toys products I’ve tried, has several size options- in this case small (insertable length of 3 inches and widest circumference of 4.4 inches), medium (insertable length of 4.5 inches and widest circumference of 6.2 inches), large (insertable length of 6.5 inches and widest circumference of 8.4 inches), and extra large (insertable length of 8 inches, widest circumference of 10.5 inches). I wouldn’t recommend using a series of Sergeant Major toys as a stretching set, as the jump between sizes is above the increments I’d recommend, but I am always a fan of the extra choice sizing options give. The price of a Sergeant Major plug varies from £39.99 to £129.99, (although at the time of writing they are available for a discounted price from £16) depending on your size choices

A lot of the plug designs I see tend to avoid realistic phallic designs, and while this isn’t something I particularly mind, I was actually super into the fact that the Sergeant Major is a more realistic penis shape. As well as the defined head, the plug has vein detailing on the shaft (although personally I don’t feel this in use) and a defined bulge on its underside. I also really loved the orange, because I have a huge soft spot for orange sex toys and it’s a colour I want to see in this industry more often. I chose to review the small size, as I wanted a toy I didn’t have to stretch up much for, although I’m now interested in trying a medium to compare/contrast to the small.

attempt_2_handBecause of the more realistic phallic shape, the head of the Sergeant Major doesn’t quite come to a point. While there’s a general tapered shape, with the very tip of the plug being broader than the middle, it’s not a taper that’s particularly noticeable in use. This means that I do tend to need a little fingering before I’m ready to insert the Sergeant Major, and I definitely think this is something that’ll be needed for larger sizes. However, the slightly blunter end does make the Sergeant Major really comfortable to sit down on while it’s inserted.

The base of this plug is a T-bar style base, which I much prefer over rounder bases. Not only are t-bar bases less likely to slip inside a butthole, but they also feel more comfortable because they fit into the curve of the wearer’s butt crack. The base on the Sergeant Major is super chunky and thick, and I had absolutely no anxiety about it being squished out of place.

With some t-bar bases, the length the bar can make vaginal penetration more difficult or impossible and I was expecting this with the Sergeant Major, but I was pleasantly surprised. I was actually able to DP myself for the first time with the Sergeant Major and my Godemiche Apprentice, which was unexpected! I don’t think this will be possible with all the size options, as the bar size seems to also scale up, but with the small it definitely is.

There isn’t a huge amount of difference in terms of thicknesses between the widest point of the plug and the neck- the former is 4.4 inches in circumference and the latter is 4.2 inches in circumference. This does mean that removing the plug after play is super easy- when there’s a large difference between the thickest point and the neck removal can be uncomfortable, as you’re essentially asking your sphincters to suddenly dilate. The only slight difference here makes that process super comfortable.

However, on the other hand, the fact the neck is so similar to the widest point of the plug means it’s very easy to accidentally push the plug out. I ended up doing that a few times, especially when clenching during orgasm. Because of this, I wouldn’t use the small size Sergeant Major for long term wear. The difference in circumference does scale up with increased plug sizes (M has a difference of 0.7 inches, L a difference of 1.9 inches, and XL a difference of 2.5 inches), so I don’t think this will be as much an issue with the larger sizes, but for the small it’s definitely an aspect I think is worth noting.

That slight difference is what gives me pause when I try to sum up my feelings on the Sergeant Major. I really like having a plug I don’t really have to stretch up for for when I just want something in my butt in combination with external stimulation. While I’m generally not a big vaginal penetration fan at the moment, I do like that the t-bar is short enough I still have the option. But the ease at which it has popped out my butt during orgasm is annoying, and while I strongly suspect that the larger sizes won’t have this issue I don’t know for sure. And I also don’t know if the t-bar on the larger sizes is short enough to also not get in the way of vaginal play or penetration.
