Review: Oxballs Ergo Small

The Oxballs Ergo is a really odd toy for me to review, because I truly love it for one kind of use while hating it for another. As a plug for wear over extended period? It’s unrivalled amongst all of the plugs I own. The thin neck, soft cushy silicone, and thick (but still soft!) base makes it incredibly comfortable for long term wear. It’s an incredibly well designed plug for that kind of use, and I honestly don’t know if I’ll ever try a plug that rivals it. Wearing the Oxballs Ergo while I’m actually trying to masturbate though? Hate that.

The Small Oxballs Ergo in Extra Squishy Smoke is a silicone plug with incredibly squishy silicone, a thick T-bar base, and an odd body shape that reminds me a bit of a kidney bean. The curve is pretty minimal and the tip of the plug pretty stubby, rather than pointed. It comes in five sizes—x-small, small, medium, large, and x-large—and the one I’m reviewing is the small. Fair word of warning though, the small is still pretty hefty, with a circumference of between 3 and 5.25 inches. It’s a chunky plug, so definitely check the measurements of your Ergo (no matter which size you choose) before ordering.

A shiny grey butt plug on a dark surface. There is a bottle of lube in the background, as well as the corner of a bisexual pride flag. The body of the plug is vaguely kidney shaped, and the base is T shapedThere’s a couple of different firmnesses options here too. My Oxballs Ergo is Extra Squishy Smoke, which comes a little softer than the medium firmness available in Blue Swirl or Platinum Swirl.

I’ll get one of the caveats out the way first. The shape and softness of my Ergo make insertion…interesting. I think the firmer medium silicone options might be a bit easier, but with the super soft I tended to struggle quite a bit to actually get the Ergo in. The plug itself has very little taper, and while stretching myself out before trying to insert the plug helped a little, the silicone squishiness meant I still had to use quite a firm grip and a lot of force to stop it moving about all over the place. I’m not an anal beginner and still struggled quite a bit, so if you are I’d suggest looking for something more tapered.

But once the Ergo is in my butt? Heaven. The softness of the extra squishy firmness and the fact there’s no roughness to the silicone means I can happily wear the Ergos for extended periods without any kind of discomfort. The neck is thin enough that the plug doesn’t feel like it’s being pushed out at any point—no matter what kind of activity I’m getting up to—while still stretching my sphincters out enough to feel full. The base is solid and thick enough that I don’t feel like I’m at any risk of losing the Ergo up my butt, while also fitting comfortably between my asscheeks. (As an aside: do note different bodies may fit the Ergo’s base differently. Betty Butch’s partner Buster had trouble with the roundness of the base. But they have quite a round butt and I have the ass of Hank Hill, so your millage may vary.)

By the way, that kidney bean shape? Means there’s always a little prostate stimulation. It’s very light, and it’s not enough to get off on, but it is always there, adding a little more sensation to wearing the Ergo.

Now for the negatives. While the Oxballs Ergo is fantastic as a long wear plug, I didn’t get on with it at all for other kinds of use. If you’re looking for a plug to wear during penis-in-vagina sex, the Ergo is not it—the base is quite long and can obstruct the vulva as a result. I also ran into a couple of issues when just having the Ergo inserted while using my Tango. I haven’t quite figured out why there’s no issue with the Ergo being pushed out of place when wearing it for a long time, but when I orgasm I always—and I mean literally always—push the Ergo out of my butt. It’s honestly a bit of a bummer (ha!) because I really love the feeling of wearing the Ergo once it’s actually in. My butt just does not want to keep it in, apparently.

I do really adore the Ergo. However, I’m only giving it a recommendation under particular circumstances. If you’re looking for a more tapered plug or a plug that’s easier to wear during PIV, the Oxballs Ergo is not where I’d point you—the Doc Johnson Mood Naughty Plugs or Snug Plugs might be a better fit.

However, if you have a decent amount of anal experience, don’t mind insertion taking a little while, and are looking for a plug to comfortably wear for a reasonable amount of time, I cannot recommend the Oxballs Ergo enough.
