Review: Hot Octopuss PleX with Flex

I recently reviewed the Hot Octopuss Jett—aka, the toy that made my partner reconsider her assertions that she didn’t like vibrators—and loved it so much that when Hot Octopuss asked if I’d like to review their new (and first) anal toy, I immediately said yes. The PleX with Flex (I’m just going to call it the PleX for the rest of this review) is a dual-motor butt plug that utilises the same combination of ‘treble’ and ‘bass’ motors as the Jett, although in a different shape. The PleX is 5.5 inches long in total, and about 4.5 inches of that is insertable. I measured it as having around a 4 inch circumference at it’s widest point, although that’s approximate. The PleX is waterproof, comes with a remote control, and is curved for targeted prostate stimulation for those that have it. The ‘with Flex’ in its name is a reference to how bendy the plug is, with the base able to bend 90 degrees in any direction, moving with your body.

While I—as ever—only really used the FleX with constant vibration when using it outside of testing, it does come with 5 pattern options, each of which can be used with both motors or a single motor of your choice, with intensity controlled independently. The only caveat to this is that the two motors must be run on the same pattern and intensity, so you can’t, for example, choose an intense pattern for the bass motor and a less intense solid speed for the treble.

Using the Hot Octopuss PleX

My main set of criticisms with the PleX are button and/or remote related, so I’m going to get them out of the way. The included remote is an absolute lifesaver, because it’s really difficult to use the buttons on the plug’s base correctly. Feeling my way to correct buttons with lubed up hands was difficult enough, and actually pressing any of them without also accidentally hitting the button on the side—either turning the plug off or putting it to a pattern—was basically impossible. This wasn’t an issue for me during testing, but I do think it’s worth noting that—unlike the PleX plug itself—the remote isn’t waterproof. If you want to use the PleX for shower, bath, or hot tub play, that’s going to be an issue. Another thing that wasn’t an issue for me, but I can see being an issue for somebody else, is that the remote doesn’t have a pattern control button on it. If you have trouble bending to reach the plug, want to have a pattern, and look to the remote as a way to make it accessible to you, you’re a bit fucked.

The other issue I found is that the neck isn’t well defined. The shape of the plug is very smooth and sleek, lacking the thin neck you see on the ‘classic’ buttplug shape. This was mostly fine, but I did run into some issues where clenching when I orgasmed very intensely caused the plug to shoot out of my butt. This was an issue only in those situations though—I didn’t have any trouble keeping the plug in while just wearing it—and butt plugs shooting out is an issue I sometimes have with even very ‘classic’ butt plug designs with well defined necks, so your milage may vary.

Other than that though? It’s excellent.

When it’s on, the vibrations from Hot Octopuss’ motors are as good in the PleX as they are in the Jett. The positioning of the motors works really well for my preference—I prefer rumblier vibrations and being stimulated less deeply, and the bass motor being in the neck is a perfect match for that. That’s not to say that I don’t also enjoy the deeper treble motor. It may be higher frequency, but it’s still not light or buzzy near its highest settings. While I tend to use the PleX by just using the bass, there are also plenty of times I want to use both treble and bass in combination. I didn’t realise how much the ‘Flex’ feature would add—the PleX is a lot more comfortable to wear while doing things than other vibrating plugs I’ve had, and I don’t get a feeling of being ‘jabbed’, like I sometimes do with other plugs. Even as somebody with a reasonable amount of ass, the base fits comfortable and ergonomically between my buttcheeks.

Can You Use PleX for Public Play?

So this is a question I know I’ll be asked, because it’s one of the first questions anyone asks about toys with remote controls, and my answer is… you technically could, but I personally wouldn’t, my personal ethical lines around public vibrator play aside. The remote does work through a few layers of cloth, but the motors are audible through the same amount of clothing. Between that and not being able to control patterns by remote, leaving you stuck on a pattern if you trigger it accidentally. In a context like a sex party, it would be totally fine, but so would pretty much any remote control plug.

Overall

Overall, I think the Hot Octopuss PleX is a good product, and with a few small design adjustments it could be fantastic. A slightly more defined neck would help with slippage. I don’t know how feasible a waterproof remote is design wise, but implementing that change alongside adding a patterns button to the remote would fix most of my complaints with this toy. I wouldn’t say no to a slight redesign of the plug base buttons to make it easier to hit the right ones, but I honestly prefer using remotes anyway and would be happy with that being the focus of any adjustments. If button woes aren’t an issue for you—you’re planning on using the plug with a partner who can press base buttons for you, don’t plan on shower sex using the PleX, don’t care for patterns, etc—then there’s a lot to love about the PleX! It’s an incredibly comfortable plug with motors that produce some of my favourite vibrations—if and when Hot Octopuss produce a very pinpoint clitoral vibrator it’s all over for literally everything else tbh.
