Review: Velvet Alley Legacy

I never ended up being the goth king that my 13 year old self wanted me to be, but I did end up being a spooky bitch with spooky tastes, who loves fun, tongue-in-cheek macabre art. So if that love crosses over with my interest in sex toys in the form of a company who make gems like a guillotine cock ring, coffin shaped paddle, or unicorn skull shaped dildo? I’m going to be smitten. Velvet Alley sent me some minis of some of their designs along with the Legacy, and I’m already in love with multiple other models.

I’ve seen a fair few unicorn horn dildos over the years I’ve been blogging, but the Legacy from Velvet Alley Designs is the only one I’ve seen to have an entire unicorn skull attached to it. It’s not for everyone, but I can’t think of a way to describe my feelings on it other than I think it absolutely fucking rules. The model is so detailed, with defined cranial features, little crack textures, and even the correct number of teeth (as an ex-archaeologist who used to work with animal bones, that’s something I get to be a pedant about). In the bright gem-like colours that Velvet Alley poured for me—I asked them to surprise me, and the pour is gorgeous—it reminds me of a crystal you’d see on the shelves of some hedge witch’s cottage or wizard’s tower.

Like many companies that make fantasy toys, Velvet Alley has a lot of customisation options. As well as choosing colour/s, you can choose between three sizes and five firmnesses—the model I received was a size medium, with an insertable length of 6.5 inches and a circumference that varies between 3.5 and 5.5 inches. The silicones that Velvet Alley use skew a bit squishier, with a medium firmness (which is what I chose) being a 00-50 shore silicone, which I’ve actually seen some other fantasy toy companies call ‘soft’.

A single colour Legacy starts at $65, with fully customised options and larger sizes costing a little extra—I’m not 100% sure what the cost for a toy like mine would be, but clicking around with options I estimated about $105.

Using the Legacy For Anal

The main thing I was excited to use the Legacy for was anal. I do own another ‘unicorn-horn’ style dildo, and using it with partners have always enjoyed using it in a sort of ‘twisting’ motion. The horn on the Legacy has a pronounced swirl texture, so I was really excited to try using it like that, and was especially interested in seeing if the large skull base made it more comfortable to hold than horn style dildos with just a small round base. While that’s not a kind of motion I like to receive anally, I love tapered toys and quite like texture anally if it’s soft and squishy. I wasn’t opposed to using the Legacy vaginally (and did—I’ll talk about that in a sec), but I primarily wanted to try and review it as an anal dildo.

I do think I made the right choice with going for a medium level softness on silicone, because once the Legacy is actually inside me, it makes it so comfortable. The texture is plush and soft and doesn’t feel grating, and when I clench during orgasm the silicone does a great job of squishing in response rather than shooting out of me, even if I don’t hold it in place. However, the squish does also make it quite difficult to first insert the Legacy. I do have a general personal preference for softer silicones for butt toys and this is an issue I’ve had with other toys that I still also love—my favourite butt plug is actually an even softer silicone than the Legacy! Angling and inserting the Legacy was a bit awkward, and I ended up needing something (cushions or another pair of hands) to support the weight of the skull base while I pushed the horn in. This is very specifically a firmness related issue, so if you’re not very specifically a squish stan and/or are unwilling to deal with awkward positioning or getting a second pair of hands, I’d recommend getting the Legacy in a firm or super firm silicone. I did find that either straddling the Legacy or(/ideally and) stretching myself up with a plug slightly larger than the diameter of the Legacy’s point also made things a lot easier.

On a less caveat-y note, my hunch about the skull base being easier to hold onto than a round base was correct! While it does make the Legacy heavier (and the issue of holding onto a round base could alternatively be solved with a hand harness), it’s a lot easier to grip for long periods of time without becoming uncomfortable.

Using the Legacy Vaginally

I was more interested in using the Legacy anally than vaginally, but I did try both. I found that the issues I had when it came to positioning and pushing a squishy horn inside me didn’t come up at all when it came to vaginal use. If you are looking to use the Legacy vaginally, I do think that medium firmness is the right one, unless you’re into super pronounced texture. Rather than being a little awkward to support during insertion, like it is for anal, the skull base is actually really helpful to have something to hold onto while pushing. As with anal, I tend to use insertable toys by holding them inside me while using something external to bring myself to orgasm, and the silicone is just as lovely and squishy to clench down onto vaginally as it is anally. And I found that holding the skull base between my thighs works really well at keeping it in place, which is something I didn’t expect! I also found that if I inserted the dildo with the teeth end of the base pointed to my butt, I could use the back of the cranium as something to grind on, although I didn’t find that it was a reliable way to bring myself to orgasm.

Cleaning

Aside from the firmness debate, I only have one issue with the Legacy. I mentioned that I love the details, including the little crack textures on the skull.

Those crack textures are a pig to clean though. If they were on a part of the toy that got inserted I would be a bit concerned about if—realistically—people are going to be able to clean it properly. I’m more relaxed given it’s only on the base, but I do still want to emphasise that it does need a little more attention and care.

Overall

I think the Velvet Alley Legacy is a really fun and unique dildo, and it’s perfect for my macabre sensibilities! I do think it’s more suited to vaginal use than anal use, especially as the heavy base can make manoeuvring and positioning for anal a little more difficult. If you do decide to get it as an anal-only or primarily anal dildo I’d recommend getting it in a firmer silicone than I chose here—it does mean the texture will be more pronounced and won’t have the lovely comfortable squish that my Legacy did, but I think that’s a fair trade off for making inserting it easier. When it comes to vaginal use, I do think it’s worth being aware of how heavy the base is, especially if you’re somebody who likes to thrust dildos and doesn’t enjoy riding them. However, if you like to hold dildos still, the skull is really great for clamping in place between your thighs, and it provides a really stable surface if you’re into riding toys.
