Review: Number One Laboratory B.J. Dildo Next Generation

So I’m coming up to my five year bloggerversary, and it feels like such an achievement that I’m still blogging all this time. One side effect of the long while I’ve been blogging, however, is that some of my older content needs updating, sometimes because it’s a product that’s no longer being made, I’ve changed my opinions on as I’ve become more educated on sex toys, or because toys have been updated since I reviewed them.

The B.J. Dildo—from Number One Laboratory—is the last category. I reviewed the original version of this dildo—which is built specifically for strap-on blowjobs and transfers suction from the dildo to the wearer—back in 2019. Since then—which I realised (with horror at the passage of time) was almost 3 years ago—Number One Laboratory have released the B.J. Dildo Next Generation, which aims to improve on the original. Like the original B.J. Dildo, the Next Generation is available in three skin-tone options and a teal colour, but unlike the original is available in both circumcised and non-circumcised options! While I chose a skin-tone option for my first gen B.J. Dildo, I decided I had to try the teal/‘green’ shade this time around, and chose the non-circumcised option because I’m still extremely excited to see any and all non-circumcised dildos on the market.

What’s Changed From the First Gen?

I feel like the best place to start with talking about the B.J. Dildo Next Generation is to talk about what’s been changed from the original. While the concept and way that the suction function works has remained the same, a lot has been changed—the Next Generation has a straighter shaft than the original, has a smaller and less ‘tab’-like base. It also—from what I can tell from shoving fingers inside the two dildos—has a slightly smaller hole. The vein detailing is less pronounced than on the original, and the silicone has a very different feel and texture. SheVibe describe the Next Generation as having ‘softer’ silicone than the original, and this is true in that it feels more plush and compresses easier, but the silicone thickness feels significantly increased, and it takes a lot more pressure for the dildo to be deshaped (and in fact I can only do this towards the base of the shaft). The physical texture of the silicone also seems to have changed—the original has a very smooth surface, while the Next Generation feels more matte and textured.

Changes That Work Well

I do want to state up front I think the Next Generation is an improvement over the original B.J. Dildo, and I say this as somebody who sang the praises of the B.J. Dildo originally. With two exceptions—which I’ll get onto in a sec—I think all the changes are unequivocally positive. To start with, I want to talk about the change in silicone thickness. Because the Next Generation holds its shape so much better, it’s actually usable as a dual-function toy. I could use my original B.J. Dildo for penetration, but it didn’t keep its shape in the fact of any clenching. The B.J. Dildo Next Generation not only does keep its shape for penetrative play, but has a really nice amount of squish, enough to feel comfortable but not so soft that it’s difficult to insert. The plusher and thicker silicone also makes it feel nicer to have the B.J. Dildo Next Generation in my mouth—it feels more substantial without being too firm, even for anal[ref]I used a condom over it anally for hygiene reasons, but didn’t have trouble cleaning it out after vaginal use[/ref].

The smaller base makes it more comfortable to fit against my body, especially as I’ve gained weight and now have a fatter mons pubis than I did three years ago. While the internal hole does feel smaller, it’s still not so small that I can’t use it with post-testosterone bottom growth, and I don’t think this will be an issue, even for people who have larger growth than me. The smaller hole/base does mean that sensation feels intensified, and I prefer the feeling of the Next Generation over the original B.J. Dildo.

Changes I’m Neutral About

The change from a curved shaft to a straight one is one I am on the fence about. I’ve mentioned preferring straight dildos for penetrative sex more than a few times on this blog, and I stand by that.

That said, I do think the straight shape can make blowjobs awkwardly angled. It works great for face-fucking, but not necessarily for more gentle blowjobs, especially as the way it sits in a harness means it points downwards instead of straight out.

Changes I’m Not A Fan Of

My one complaint about the B.J. Dildo Next Generation is the texture change I mentioned earlier. It means that not only does the B.J. Dildo Next Generation absolutely guzzle lube, but also makes it seem less polished and finished than the original B.J. Dildo. Admittedly, the texture does make the Next Generation feel closer to having a skin texture and I can see that working for some people, but I’m really not a fan personally. I also think it makes the areas of trimmed silicone—such as the end of the ‘urethra’ and the body-side of the base—look weirdly untextured and shiny in comparison.

Overall

With the exception of the lube-guzzling texture change and the change in shaft shape (which—to be fair— I feel pretty neutral about), I think the B.J. Dildo Next Generation is a significant improvement over the original, and I loved the original so that’s some pretty intense praise! I think the Next Generation is genuinely dual purpose as a toy in a way that the original wasn’t, and the changes that facilitate this (making it softer and keep its shape more) also help refine it for its main purpose. Even with my quibbles about the texture and shaft shape, if I were given the choice to keep only one of the two B.J. Dildos I have, I’d choose the Next Generation with absolutely no hesitation!
