Review: Number One Laboratory BJ Dildo

base.pngThe BJ Dildo from Number One Laboratory has one of the coolest concepts I’ve seen in the sex toy industry. This silicone dildo is hollow and has an open end, so when placed over the genitals can transfer suction and tugging sensations to the wearer’s junk. It’s an awesome concept, and as a pre-bottom surgery trans man who loves strap-on blowjobs and has pretty bad bottom dysphoria, I was super excited to try it out.

The BJ Dildo is available for $80 from Good Vibrations, and comes in three skin tones, black, and a delightful teal green. It has a length of 7.5 inches and a diameter of 1.75 inches at the widest point. I asked to review the light skin tone BJ Dildo, as I thought having a skin tone close to mine would make me more gender euphoric during use, but I’m super glad that Number One Laboratory also offers non-skin tone options[ref]The teal green in particular is so gorgeous I was almost tempted to ask for that colour rather than a skin tone[/ref].

bjdildo.pngSuction during strap-on blow jobs is something I’ve tried before, albeit with products that are intended as STP devices and/or prosthetics rather than as blowjob specific toys. I’ve given blowjobs through the Emisil Gen 2, through my partner’s CalEx STP Packer, and through our FWB’s 4-in-1 FreeTom prosthetic, so the idea of a strap-on blowjob the wearer can feel isn’t foreign or new to me. What was new is how good the BJ Dildo is at this. It’s very, very good.

I think the BJ dildo is better at transferring sensation than the products I’ve tried before for a few reasons. The first is the base shape. The base of the BJ Dildo is shaped to fit around the clit/dick, rather than around the urethra/vulva, as is the case with the STP devices I’ve used before. The suction transfers to the wearer more effectively because of this.

I was actually originally a little concerned that the open space at base might be a little too small, as I’ve sometimes found that toys that aren’t explicitly marketed towards trans men tend to forget about the growth that happens on testosterone. But the base of the BJ Dildo was super roomy and comfortable for me and the partners I tried the BJ Dildo with. Just as a disclaimer, both I and the people I tested the BJ Dildo out with are on testosterone HRT and have experienced bottom growth, so I can’t speak to the experiences of cis women or AFAB trans people who aren’t on T.

The second reason I think the BJ Dildo works better than the products we’ve used before is the firmness of the silicone. It feels a lot more solid than the CalEx STP Packer or Emisil Gen 2 and the silicone doesn’t fold so easily. Because it holds shape much better, you can receive more vigorous blowjobs. I don’t feel like I have to be super gently when I give my FWB a blowjob with the BJ Dildo in the way I do when I blow him through his FreeTom.

inhand.pngThe third reason is the BJ Dildo’s shape. While the FreeTom and Emisil prosthetics I’m comparing the BJ Dildo to are intended to be useable for play, they’re primarily STP packers. Even with an insertable rod, they don’t point up in the way that the BJ Dildo does, and don’t produce as good a visual. And the visual that the BJ Dildo provides is really great, both from a gender euphoria and just general sexy perspective. While my primary partner doesn’t get off with the BJ Dildo (and doesn’t using prosthetics or an STP, FWIW), he really likes being able to see me sucking his cock and being able to feel some kind of sensation at the same time.

Something I wasn’t expecting from the BJ Dildo is how useful it is when it comes to hookups. I’m stone in terms of casual sex [ref]Stone here being used to mean ‘I don’t like my genitals being directly touched’[/ref], and while I’m mostly happy not getting off during hookups, it does sometimes bug me. Depending on how bad my bottom dysphoria is on a given day, using the BJ Dildo sometimes functions as a loophole. Technically, somebody isn’t touching my junk, so my dysphoria doesn’t get triggered as badly. The BJ Dildo isn’t a constant fix- I have to be wearing it in a harness, which dampens some of the sensations, and some days I’m still as dysphoric as if I weren’t using the BJ Dildo- but a sometimes solution is still something.

That’s not to say I think the BJ Dildo is the greatest sex toy ever made. It’s very singular in function, and I think if that function isn’t something super important to you, it’s worth a miss. While the BJ dildo is more firm than the pack and play prosthetics I’ve tried, the hollowness has still meant it ‘folds’ a little when I’ve tried using it for PIV penetration. I’ve had a bit more success trying to use it for penetration with the Emisil rod inserted, but it’s still not been perfect. I have also seen some claims that the BJ Dildo is packable and that’s… mostly not true. You technically can pack with it if you flip it upside down, but the resulting bulge is so big and firm that it’s not very practical. I’d wear the BJ Dildo like that for a play party, but not outside of that context.

However, if what you want from the BJ Dildo is just a dildo for blowjobs, then I don’t think you can do any better. If you’re transmasculine, I’d definitely recommend the BJ Dildo for the gender euphoria possibilities. Even if you’re not trans, if you’re a fan of suction (during either oral sex or with air pulsation toys like the offerings from Satisfyer) I’d say the BJ Dildo is worth checking out. It’s not an incredibly versatile toy, but it is really excellent at what it does.

If you’d like to buy the BJ Dildo, it’s available from Good Vibrations for $80
