Review: Lovehoney Unisex Strap-On Harness Briefs

The first strap-on harness I used regularly was a brief harness from RodeoH. While I’ve definitely gravitated towards more strappy harnesses in the years since (with an exception for my beloved Tomboi) and my body shape has changed enough that harness isn’t usable any more, I still have a soft spot for it. While I’ve learned to love strappy-harnesses, at the time a more simple briefs style harness felt more approachable and less scary when I was new to strap-on sex. The brief style also made me feel a lot more comfortable wearing it under my clothes — while I’m now more than happy to pack-and-play with my Joque, it would have felt emotionally a bit too much at the time.

Unfortunately, RodeoH harnesses are really hard to find in the UK, where I’m based. I’m aware Sh! does stock them, but that’s the only place I could find them when searching for this review. I want an affordable strap-on brief harness to point people who want to try strap-on topping towards, and I thought it would be worth checking if the Lovehoney Unisex Strap-On Harness Briefs was a potential solution.

The Lovehoney Unisex Strap-On Harness Briefs

The Lovehoney Unisex Strap-On Harness Briefs are a pretty standard briefs style strap-on harness, with two pockets for vibrators, and an o-ring that can hold dildos with up to a 4.75 inch circumference. The version of the harness I’m reviewing is a more simple design with black fabric and a red contrast, although there is a pink and black option available as part of a kit, as well as a lower rise lace version if you want something more femme. I’m a bit of a basic butch when it comes to underwear style harnesses and I’m also a little on the chubby side, so the mid-rise of this version of the harness suits me pretty well — I can see it feeling a bit too utilitarian/basic for some people, but I am not those people.

They come in 4 sizes, ranging from a 8-10 UK size (4-6 US) up to a 20-22 UK (16-18 US). I do wish there were some extended sizes, especially as a US 16 is the size of the average American woman, but it’s pretty good compared to some strap-on brands (one of which I will not mention and only goes up to a UK 14).

In terms of comparison to the RodeoH harnesses (bearing in mind I don’t have my old RodeoH harness with me to compare directly), they have similar 95% cotton, 5% spandex materials. I do definitely find RodeoH harnesses to be more visually pleasing, as I’m not too fond of the little Lovehoney logo tag and RodeoH have a wide colour selection. However, there’s a big price difference between the two — the RodeoH briefs are $59.99 while the Lovehoney briefs are $34.99.

Wearing/Using the Lovehoney Unisex Strap-On Harness Briefs

One of the main selling points of brief style strap-on harnesses is how easy they are to put on, and the Lovehoney Harness Briefs are no exception. They’re true to size (although I’d recommend sizing down if you’re between sizes), very comfortable, and can be adjusted to be worn higher or lower waisted depending on your preference.

The cotton fabric does have a bit more give and movement to it than a spanex/neoprene blend would, but I’ve found this is relatively minimal unless I’m using a particularly heavy dildo or thrusting more intensely. I definitely have a strong preference for the Tomboi, but I a) play with people who like larger toys relatively often, b) tend to pound quite hard/fast for a good 40% of my partners, and c) am an experience strap-on top with the muscle memory to be able to do this. For most strap-on tops — especially newbies — this isn’t likely to be the case. I do have some concerns about the longevity of this harness (harness I’ve had in the past made of a similar material blend have lost tension and got less control over time as I’ve washed them), but for people who only strap-on top occasionally or who want to just try out a starter harness, this might not be a huge problem.

Strapless Strap-Ons

So how easily a harness can be used with a ‘strapless’ strap-on isn’t something I’d normally check. I’m not a big fan of that style of dildo — I don’t really like vaginal penetration in the presence of other people, I find grinders work well to give me stimulation from strap-on topping if I want it, and much of the time I actually prefer strap-on topping without the distraction of stimulation on my body. However, the description of the Lovehoney Strap-On Harness Briefs specifically mentioned it was “compatible with strapless strap-ons”, so I had to test it.

(If you’re wondering why somebody would use a harness with a toy where the selling point is the lack of a harness, I wrote a blog post about strapless strap-ons that you should read.)

Unfortunately, the Lovehoney Strap-On Harness Briefs are — in my opinion after testing — really badly suited to strapless strap-ons. The o-ring naturally sits around the clitoris, which is perfect placement for general strap-on sex. However, it means it’s much too high to comfortably hold a strapless strap-on anywhere near where the shaft meats the ‘bulb’ that’s meant to be worn inside the top’s body. You either end up losing a ton of shaft length (and getting minimal/almost no support in exchange) or have to wear the harness very low to compensate. And because the Lovehoney Strap-On Harness Briefs aren’t adjustable in the way buckle harnesses are, this leaves it hanging far too loosely on the body to actually offer any support to the strapless.

Lovehoney Unisex Strap-On Harness Briefs vs SpareParts Tomboi

You know I love my SpareParts Tomboi. It’s probably absolutely no surprise that the Tomboi wins without a doubt for me, but I want to take the time to explain why.

Firstly, the material choices. The nylon and spandex of the Tomboi definitely means it’s more body-hugging, but this tightness makes me feel I have a lot more control. It will also last a longer period of time before getting stretched out enough it no longer offers support.

The second reason is the lining. In the Lovehoney Unisex Strap-On Harness Briefs, the crotch lining is made of the same cotton-spandex as the rest of the harness. This is fine, but the mesh of the Tomboi’s lining is much better at wicking away sweat and vag fluid, and is much more comfortable (and less swamp-crotchy) to wear for longer play sessions. I’ve happily worn the Tomboi to sex parties, but I wouldn’t do the same with the Lovehoney Unisex Strap-On Harness Briefs for aforementioned swamp-crotch reasons.

However, I’m aware I’m coming at this as somebody who a) knows they like strap-on sex and that it’s a huge part of their sex life b) has the disposable income to pay £90 for a harness (as I have done, in order to have my Tomboi in two colour options). The Tomboi is the perfect harness for me now, but it wouldn’t have been approachable/accessible to my 18 year old self.

Overall

The Lovehoney Unisex Strap-On Harness Briefs are a good harness if you’re new to strap-on sex or brief harnesses specifically, and want something at an affordable price point to test the waters. They’re definitely not perfect — the fabric choice means that they do have a built-in life limit, because with enough use they’ll stretch beyond the point where they offer support, and they aren’t really compatible with strapless strap-ons.

However, they are comfortable, have a reasonable size range, hold up well when fucking (aside from rougher play), and are at a very reasonable price point. And if you buy them and discover you don’t like strap-on sex? The cotton is comfortable enough I’ve worn them as just an everyday pair of underwear during a laundry day emergency.
