Review: Avant Pride P9 Bear Dildo

The P9 from Blush Novelties’ Avant Pride line is, like the other toys from the line, a suction cup silicone dildo with a colour scheme based on a pride flag. This time the P9’s colour scheme is based off the Bear Pride flag. If you don’t know what a bear is (in this context at least), it’s LGBT community slang for a bisexual or gay man who’s on the hairy and heavy-set side. It does have a little bit more of a history, with origins as a gay sub/counter-culture, but that’s the basic gist of it, I don’t actually know if I ‘count’ as a bear or not- while I do have a lot of body hair and a little bit of a chubby belly, I also have relatively little facial hair, and I’m on the young side[ref]I’m talking young enough to actually technically a gen-z here[/ref]. Some people have called me a bear in the past, while others haven’t. Either way though, I’m happy to have the P9 in my collection.

suctioncupThe P9 has a unique shape among the toys in the Avant Pride line. It’s far more realistic shaped than the other dildos, with a short and thick shaft that curves downwards. It also has balls, which is something none of the other toys in the Pride line have. However, like the other toys in this collection, the P9 Bear Dildo is body safe silicone and has a suction cup. The P9 is on the shorter side, with an insertable length of just 5.5 inches, but is still very thick, with a width of 1.75 inches (so circumference of just under 5.5 inches), and is available for $33.99 from SheVibe.

My first reaction to unboxing the P9 was that it looked quite different to a lot of the dildos I own. While I do have dildos that curve, if they’re realistic they tend to curve upwards, while the P9’s shaft curves downwards. This design choice did end up making a lot of sense to me (more on this later), but for a while I was a little confused. While the P9 does have balls, they’re quite small compared to the shaft. Definitely not small enough that I wouldn’t consider the P9 harness compatible and anal safe, but enough that it looks a little off in terms of realism. Like the other Avant Pride toys I’ve reviewed, the P9’s silicone is single density and pretty firm, with just a hint of squish if you press hard, but no bending.

headboardWhile the length of the P9 wasn’t an issue for me vaginally, the firmness and girth in combination definitely isn’t my preference, and I ended up enjoying it a lot more for anal. The fact that the P9 works better for anal seems pretty obvious in hindsight, especially given the demographic this flag colour scheme is associated with. But it wasn’t until I actually attached the P9 to my headboard, and saw the way that the shaft curved downwards that I actually thought about it. My favourite way to use the P9 (and I think the one it was designed for) is in doggy style, with the shaft curving towards my belly. That positioning works really well for prostate stimulation (the curve would also work well for g-spot stimulation, but I found positioning for this when the P9 was attached to my headboard a little difficult). After realising that, I felt more confident about how to use the P9 in non-solo sex as well. Strapping it on in a harness with the balls in anatomical position, and using it for prostate stimulation in doggy style worked excellently.

While I didn’t end up using the suction cup for penetrative solo play much beyond the first positioning revelations, I did use the suction cup when I wanted to use P9 as a blowjob dildo. Sometimes during masturbation, I really like to give a dildo a blowjob, sometimes as an extension of whatever I’m fantasising about, and sometimes just because the sensation is nice. The P9 is way too firm to feel anything like an actual penis in my mouth, but most of the blowjobs I give in partnered sex are to my partner’s strap-ons, so that doesn’t really matter to me. I generally lie on my back during masturbation and have mostly been sticking the P9 to my headboard, meaning I don’t need to use my hands when performing dildo fellatio. While there are other toys I also like using as blowjob toys, none of them have suction cups, so I don’t get the easy hands free action that I do with the P9.

suctioncupWhile the P9 seems like a pretty basic single density dildo at first, the subtle differences in form between it and the other single density dildos I have really shine in use. While the downwards curve did make me raise eyebrows at first, it actually does make a lot of difference, and changed how I chose to use the P9. I think whether I’d recommend the P9 or not depends largely on what your preferences are when it comes to masturbation, especially in terms of positioning. If you’re largely a ‘lie on your back and thrust by hand’ type masturbator and you don’t really fancy a change [ref] no shade, me too most of the time tbh [/ref], then the P9 probably isn’t the one for you. But if you’re open to experimenting with different kinds of positioning, or know that you’re interested in utilising the suction cup and like doggy style? Then the P9 is well worth a look.
